Charged with raping daughters

Daughters' alleged rapist denied bail

A 43-year-old man was charged with regularly raping three of his daughters over the past eight years ever since they hit puberty.

Police sources said the Cospicua man used to wait for his daughters to have their first menstrual cycle after which he would start raping them on a regular basis.

He has four daughters but the younger one is little more than a toddler, the others in their late teens and early 20s.

It is also being alleged that the man was very violent with the girls and also his wife, who was beaten and threatened when she confronted him about the abuse. She still managed to leave the house together with her daughters, taking them to a shelter from where the police were called in, police sources said.

The alleged abuse had been going on for years. Each of the girls thought they were alone in being abused and kept silent, intimidated by their father's alleged threats.

However, last month, the second sibling realised that her younger sister was also receiving the same treatment and spoke out, only to discover that her elder sister was also being raped, police sources said.

Wearing an oversized jacket and heavy gold rings, the man stood still in the dock as the court banned publication of his name in order to protect the victims.

In the arraignment, which was over in a matter of minutes, he denied raping the girls, defiling them and being violent.

Defence lawyer Ian Farrugia asked for bail, so the man could continue running a bar he owns. However, the prosecution objected.

Magistrate Consuelo Scerri Herrera refused bail and remanded him in custody.

Police Inspectors Louise Calleja and Elton Taliana prosecuted.

Lawyers Manwel Mallia and Kathleen Grima appeared parte civile for the family.

In fact this guy is going to get prosecuted, to the contrary of what happens in the case of a particular institution, which seems to have the licence to act freely in such matters.
