A joint police operation has smashed a Romanian crime ring suspected of smuggling child thieves into Britain.

Around 300 police and anti crime prosecutors searched 40 homes in Tandarei in south-east Romania today.

They questioned 30 people on suspicion of taking 168 Roma or Gypsy children aged between seven and 15 to Britain for "criminal activities."

More than 20 officers from the Metropolitan police took part in the action.

Prosecutors found pistols, hunting rifles and large sums of money during the house searches and 17 people were arrested.
