Man acquitted of groping charges
The Magistrates' Court has acquitted a truck driver who was accused of groping a woman driver he stopped to help.
The incident happened just outside one of the Kirkop tunnels in the afternoon of Juy 26, 2008.
Truck driver Juanito Sciberras signalled Maruti driver Stephanie Galea that one of her rear wheels was coming off.
When they both stopped, it was found that three of the wheel nuts were loose. Mr Sciberras fastened them and went under the car to check the wheel.
Ms Galea said that as he emerged from under the car he put his hand under her skirt and touched her private parts. She also told the court that while under the car, the accused had invited her for a drink.
The accused denied groping the woman but said they had exchanged phone numbers, and Ms Glea had given him a number which was wrong.
The court said that it could not declare that Ms Galea had filed a false report but she may have formed an impression of what really happened. There was no doubt that this was an unusual situation during which she had come into contact with a person she had never met.
Mr Sciberras was freed of all charges.

@Lisa Schembri Obviously I dont face such lewd acts myself but unfortunately my wife experienced such whilst changing a wheel on her car whilst out with our children. Of all places this was a quiet area in Mgarr. This is simply down to the maturity of a large minority almost a majority of the men on this island. All down to the lack of respect towards women!!!

I am SO fed up of these attacks on women on the street.
I am sick of hearing lewd comments from men about my appearance, I am sick of men trying to touch me on the street, I am sick of men trying to offer me a ''lift'' home at night, I am sick strange adult men following me home!!!!
I cant take it any more!!!!

@Charles Sammut, here we go again with the holier than thou attitude. You have missed an important word in the article,i.e `reported `. In Sweden there has been a huge lobbying to report rape cases which seems that it had the effect it was after. Do not get me wrong, the number of rape cases is high, in fact each case of rape is higher than it should be, which is an utopian zero. While it is possible to find out rape cases reported, those left unreported are more difficult to find out, well almost impossible. You and me both know that in Maltese and southern european countries reporting a rape case could bring shame on the family and so it is left unreported. I do not believe that in Sweden there is more rape cases than any other country. They are just more reported which leads to the fact that statistics get higher. So yes I still stand by my comment until you show me otherwise, which this article failed to do.

@ Moses Mula Tell us what you see in Sweden, where you are living now. In the multicultural Utopia you would have us believe that Sweden is, they don't bother to grope, they just go straight to rape. http://www.thelocal.se/19102/20090427/

It's stricking that nobody remarked that this man has probably saved this woman's life or at least serious injury, as well as possibly other road users - if this woman's car had to veer off uncontrollably due to a detached wheel, by noticeing her defective wheel, and going out of his way to rectify the problem.

@Moses Mula I totally agree with you. This country's holier than thou attitude is not only appalling but also an obstacle for change. Until the maltese accept that they can be guilty and that things of such a nature happen in Malta, done by Maltese they will never move forward. I have seen so much of the crap you mention that I finally became so disgusted by the what seems to fall within the accepted parameters of 'Maltese Culture' that I became dismissive beyond my own liking. @ Colin Stanely We don't have women raped! "maybe now with all the different people coming here from other countries" Exactly what MMula is talking about! No maltese men are so nice and gentle and only have clean intentions in mind, perhaps a cup of tea and some clean conversation. Really ppl like you just get to me! @ Lori Marchi. I agree, I doubt a woman would bother wasting her time this way. But don't forget Women are evil man are all so wholesome and it is these 'Evil' women who trick men into sex! tsk tsk tsk
Grow Up Malta!

@Simon Swartz
Groping only becomes abuse if the recipient finds it offensive and indicates so. Thus one cannot really report such cases on behalf of the presumed victim. Moreover, most victims who suffer such things become even more embarrassed if they have to report them officially and substantiate their claims against an abuser who will invariable deny the charges and try to make you out to be a liar or deranged women i.e. inflict further abuse but of a different kind.
What I find particularly cruel though is the attitude of colleagues who have witnessed abuse but deny knowing anything even when the victim requests witnesses and the attitude of vindictive abusers who make the life of an employee hell just because she has rejected their advances. For reasons which I still fail to understand, certain abusers become obsessed with getting their own back on an unwilling victim even if they have the luxury of enjoying themselves with several fully co-operative other women as well as women who initiate advances themselves at the same workplace.

@Simon Swartz, was my attitude the problem? Are you for real? For various reasons I had lost my faith in maltese justice.. These gropings were seen as a part of the culture and some of my bosses surely knew but never dared to take action. How naive are you to think that an anonymous call to the police will get you anywhere? Try it yourself and see if anything comes of it.
@Colin Stanley, first if most of the Maltese didn`t have a holier then thou attitude and believed that Malta is the most moral country then I would not critisize that much and secondly I do that because I am Maltese and Malta is my country, and besides my family and friends live there. I would have thought that the comment by rbuttigieg would have made more of an impression but what do I know. Some people like maybe yourself think that I hate Malta and the maltese and think that Sweden is perfect. Far from it mate. But the truth hurts and no matter what kind of comments I will get, I stand by what I said in my first comment.

@Moses Mula
It's because of persons with your attitude that no actions are taken. If you really used to see all the groping you are saying at least once you should have got fed up and reported anonymously to the police especially the cases you saw at your work place.
But alas you are no different than anyone here in Malta.

@ Mr. M. Mula. you are always ready to criticize your own country, in Sweden this, in Sweden that, etc, etc.in Malta you do this, that and the other.it's not nice to treat women badly, but at least till now , we don't have women being raped and killed like they have in a lot of countries, maybe now with all the different people coming here from other countries, who knows what will happen in the future.

Tell that to my friend (a female) who was raped by not one, but TWO of her Junior College classmates 10 years ago. Both as Maltese as can be.

for some it seems whatever a woman says is the gospel truth, while a man is always the guilty party.
such cases ,unless there are witnesses, are difficult to prove .

MIght have formed the wrong impression! this is crazy! I would certainly not form a wrong impression if someone had to put his hand under my skirt! so does the court think that the woman had any time to waste taking the man to court just because she has nothing better to do? she probably gave him the wrong phone details because she was alone and was scared that he might do worse than grope her! Is this the way our courts are protecting maltese women from such lewd acts?

No wonder we do not here about more such cases. God knows how many times I saw men groping women where I used to work in Malta and many bars and clubs in Paceville when I was still living in Malta. Alot of women cannot find the courage to report such cases for two main reasons, 1) the male has a bigger chance to be believed than the female and 2) the female might get a bad name. I am not saying that this man really did what he was accused of but that these kind of cases happen everyday in Malta. I repeat, I have seen lots with my own eyes. Why I did not report any? Knowing the maltese culture I realised it would be in vain. Have I seen any in Sweden? Once where I used to work and the culprit was fired.
