I stood awaiting the opening of the refurbished public toilets in Strait Street, Valletta. The dignitaries arrived, the speeches commenced. Although, with respect, Fr Peter Serracino Inglott's speech turned into a somewhat long-winded sermon, the content was most interesting as he managed to mix the sordid past with the saintly acts of Nazju Falzon.
The ladies who posed as so-called barmaids got into the spirit. Unfortunately, there were no sailors, which could have really given a feel of what it was like in bygone days.
I feel that what is really important is the fact that, at long last, Malta has a public convenience to be proud of and I just cannot wait for other local councils to take a leaf out of Valletta's approach.
All in all, it is certainly a first-class project. The only slight disappointment is the fact that there are only two lavatories, one of each, although my wife informed me the ladies' has three wash-hand basins!
