Vella's team win San Michel tournament

This year's San Michel team tournament at the Vittoriosa Lawn Tennis Club (VLTC) came to a close last week.

The tournament attracted the participation of 70 men and 40 women. Players were divided into six teams and the tournament's captains were Christine Scerri, John Azzopardi, Jacqueline Vanhear, Joe Vella, Stefan Licari and Carmen Difesa.

The competition was spread over 12 weeks with teams playing each other over two rounds and the top four proceeding to the KO stage. In the semis, Licari's team defeated that captained by Vanhear while Vella's team saw off Difesa's.

The final was a hard-fought encounter in which Vella's team prevailed over Licari's outfit. The two teams claimed the same number of sets but Vella's side took the title thanks to a better games difference.
