Spanish galleon
Photo: Chris Sant Fournier.
It would not have been around at the time of the Great Siege of 1565 but passersby must have been reminded of that epic conflict when Galeon Andalucia, a replica of a 17th century Spanish galleon berthed at Pinto Wharf yesterday afternoon. The 52-metre long vessel, which is on its way to China for the 2010 Shanghai Expo, will be open to visitors tomorrow between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. and from 4 to 7 p.m.

Yes, I fully agree with what Mr. Morana and Mr. Portelli had said, we should have a replica of a Knights of St. John galleon at the Grand Harbour.

Ship building in Malta dates back to much before the Knights period. I just cannot overemphasize here this golden opportunity in promoting seafaring activities in the Maltese islands. There is so much potential here. Tourism will definitely benefit from such and its goes without saying how much seafaring culture the Maltese islands have ingrained in them.

Why not have our own full size working replica of a Knights of St John galleon with oars etc berthed by St Angelo that tourists and Maltese alike can visit to experience what live what have been like on these ships. It would be a great experience which people would flock to for sure.

The Grand Harbour offers excellent berthing facilities and an excellent historical and scenic for such vassels which endow our harbour.
Perhaps the Malta Maritime Authority and the Malta Tourism Authority may wish to coordinate their efforts and organise 'events' which would attract more 'sailing ships' to our harbours.

This photograph needs just some minor editing. I would have removed all those radio masts in the background, the buoy behind the galleon, and removed either the surf at the bow, or released those sails. Then....., yes,...... picture perfect !!!
