Maltese diving instructor logs 25,000th dive
Dive Systems’ Chief Instructor Joseph Chircop, better known to his friends as Derek, logged his 25,000 dive during a PADI Rescue Diver training session on Saturday.
He started diving at the age of 14 and started working as an instructor in 1978.
Mr Chircop has worked with several local diving schools and ran his own dive schools ‘Derek’s Scuba School’ and ‘North East Diving Services’ for a number of Years.
In recent years he has been working in the Maldives, Egypt and Kuwait as an instructor. Mr Chircop is a PADI Staff instructor, CMAS Three Star Instructor and SSI Dive Con Specialist.
Mr Chircop said that notwithstanding all the diving he has done over the years, he still has a passion for diving.
“My next holiday will be a diving trip. Many ask me how on earth could I go diving when I’m on holiday since this is my job, but I still have a great passion for diving and so it is only natural for me”.
Dive Systems Director Paul Sciberras said it was a great pleasure to work with a person with the experience and know-how that Mr Chircop had, and the 25,000 dives he had logged was an important milestone.

Cheers to Derek. Up to next 25000! Since Derek joined our organization in 1993 as diver and later as Course Director for Malta and the Maldives, we know him as a very dedicated and truly warm water diver. This year I'll hope to visit him again and make the 25434th dive with him.

Congratulations Derek. You have made history above and under water. Respect and appreciation big guy for you as a diver, instructor, expert on marine life and as a friend (even with that thing under your nose...). I wish you many nice dives and at least 1 more with me in the near future. To celebrate I will bring you herring and a cold specific Dutch bottle. Again, something from under water and above water. Cheers!

Wow what a count. I am Derek’s, better looking, cousin and I have to say when he took me diving he was a totally different person towards even me. 100% professional and nothing less. Anyone who dives with him will want to go back in the water right away. I know I did. Nice one mate but starting to show your age with numbers like that. LOL

Well Done Derek, seems only yesterday when you signed off my last BSAC training dive, when in reality it was 27 years ago. Thank you for making my diving not only safe but fun as well, long may you continue.

Thanks for being there for me on my first dive into the deep blue so many years ago. Nowadays I prefer wine over water, though! Cheers Derek!!!
