Many Maltese families dream of going to Disneyland in Paris at least once during their children's childhood. I logged onto the Air Malta website to check out what flights are available during September and the price for a family of four (three adults and a child). By mistake, I input the origin as Paris and the destination as Malta. The price came to €384, which I thought was very reasonable for four return flights.

We decided to go ahead with this, so on my second attempt I logged in the same dates but simply switched the origin to Malta and destination to Paris. To my surprise, not only was the price different, but it was beyond any comparison.

This time the price totalled €1,044. I could not believe my eyes: same dates, same aircraft, same number of passengers. The only difference is that a French family would pay around a third of what a Maltese family is expected to pay.

I appreciate that prices fluctuate according to supply and demand but we are talking about the very same seats.

This is clearly discrimination by our national airline against the very same people whose taxes are keeping it flying. It is no wonder that Maltese children can only dream of visiting Disneyland.

Low cost airlines may not be so perfect, but they certainly do not take advantage by overcharging Maltese people.

Their cost is for everyone, immaterial of where they originate from.
