Tunisian Ambassador Mohammed Ali Ganzoui recently hosted a reception at his Attard residence commemorating the 54th anniversary of Tunisia's independence from France on March 20, 1956.
Guests included foreign diplomats, ministers and members of the opposition. The guest of honour was President George Abela.
In his address Dr Abela spoke of the similar experiences which Tunisia and Malta shared, including colonisation legacies. He said that today, as independent states, both nations pride themselves of democracy, political stability and economic progress.
Dr Abela also referred to the close diplomatic relations expressed by the two countries in order to strengthen and diversify their relationship. Here he cited the annual meetings of bilateral cooperation where various topics, including economic and commercial matters, as well as the trade development sector, are reviewed.
Mr Ganzoui paid tribute to the sacrifices made by the Tunisian people throughout the years as well as to the historical role of its statesmen in laying the foundations of a modern state.
He said Tunisia has opted for a foreign policy based on the principles of moderation, consensus, tolerance and respect for international validity, the rejection of violence and extremism as well as dialogue between civilisations, cultures and religions.
A gesture of solidarity was expressed by Dr Abela when he invited all present to raise their glasses to toast to the health of President Ben Ali and to the prosperity of the Maltese and Tunisian people.
Guests enjoyed a traditional Tunisian buffet dinner and a selection of Tunisian wines and sweets, including typical fresh dates.
