Getting to Sliema by car is a 'nightmare'
AD criticises council for not doing enough
The Sliema council is not doing enough to protect the quality of life of its residents from the environmental problems caused by the large-scale projects in the area, Alternattiva Demokratika chairman Michael Briguglio said yesterday.
"The voice of Sliema residents needs to be heard... The Sliema council seems to be doing nothing about this," Mr Briguglio told a news conference, as he stood in front of the Townsquare project site. The project includes the construction of a shopping area, residential units, underground parking and an open square around Villa Drago on Tower Road.
The project developer recently submitted a series of changes to the Malta Environment and Planning Authority, proposing that the tower on the site of the former Union Club be reduced to 23 storeys from 32 storeys. However, it was originally planned to be 15 storeys.
There will also be a new 15-storey block in an area originally earmarked for a four-storey block, while another area's height has increased from four to seven storeys.
"These changes are not sufficient to protect residents from pollution and traffic congestion in Sliema," said Mr Briguglio, a former Sliema local councillor.
"With the recent opening of The Point (shopping complex) in Tigné, getting to Sliema by car has already become a nightmare - let alone when the entire Midi project is completed together with Fort Cambridge and Townsquare," he said, pointing out that all these projects included high-rise residential towers.
He added that when the Townsquare project was initially launched, AD had backed it but only because a maximum 15-storey height had been established.
Now, studies commissioned by the developers showed that the development will cast its giant shadow on parts of the Qui-Si-Sana promenade, rocky foreshore and sea.

Why not extend the promenade over the sea and add 1 or 2 extra lanes to the main road ? Thats the only place I see a lot of traffic.

Re. The precarious Sliema traffic poblems:
" This is not an easy problem to come up with a short-term solution, as there is currently no alternative routing for the heavy traffic (incl. Bus routes) passing through Rue D’Argens, Mrabat Road, Ruddolf Street. Moreover, You are correct in your assertion that traffic will definitely increase as a result of the developments taking place in Tigne’ but government policy has already been taken and planning approvals have already been given in this respect. "
"In the long term (sometime in the future), the upgrade of the Kappara junction (EU funds have been allocated) coupled with the construction of the Manoel Island link road (no funds allocated as yet) and widening of the Strand (no funds allocated as yet) would result in significant diversion of traffic from residential roads such as Rue D’Argens and Reggie Miller Street onto a fast, high capacity link between Regional Road and Tigne’. Parking control (using payment) and public transport promotion (bus priority / better bus services) could also reduce traffic levels but these measures would need political commitment."

Park in Gzira and leg it, or stay away unless really necessary. But No! where else could we parade our flashy cars if not on the Sliema front and The Ferries?

Townsquare will turn Qui Si Sana/Tigne into a dark sunless place and add more problems to those being created by Midi and Fort Cambridge. The buildings as proposed will even affect the bit of beach that remains, it will not get any sun at all. You will not want to drive past let alone go sit/swim there.Even in Summ it's cold in the shade.
To add insult to injury,Fort Cambridge is now asking to extend up by another floor.Lest any forget, a long battle was fought and compomises were agreed as to building heights when the project went before MEPA. Now by stealth, the developers,so I hear, have put forward new proposals to add more floors. I need not remind the Prime MInister of the promises made to the residents some time ageo re building heights. We hope that we will not be going down the same road as the Midi project where they started off with a small development and then step by step asked and obtained the ugly monstrosity that it is today. We demand and require that promises given before the election will not be forgotten but enforced.

By bus takes 1 hour 30 minutes from Msida to Sliema, by car takes you at least 45 minutes. Nightmare is an understatement !
