After years of debate, taken to extremes in these last few months, with comments in the newspapers and online ranging from the objective to the insolent towards both the government as well as the architect, a new positive chapter opens up for our capital city.
With the Malta Environment and Planning Authority issuing the final go-ahead for Renzo Piano's project, all those who have ever dreamed of seeing the heart of our capital repaired must have breathed a sigh of relief.
Considering his numerous large-scale international projects, Mr Piano's Valletta project cannot but be appreciated for its prudent, cautious approach towards the architectural heritage of a capital city which is not just historic but, above all, living. It also provides new possibilities from the aspects of culture, tourism, economy and international identity.
The often passionate debate this project has engendered has shown the keen interest of the public in the state of Valletta. Let us hope that at least this has raised an awareness in all to genuinely respect and honour Valletta for all that it means.
When the ground will be broken in Freedom Square, it will be an event in itself, replete with significance, for Valletta cries no more.
