The top two Maltese selections in this year's European Championships, currently underway at the Dolmen Hotel, Qawra, made it to the knock-out stages of the tournament after rounding up their group qualifiers with victories, yesterday.

Alex Borg, Duncan Bezzina and Simon Zammit (Malta 1), were in a class of their own as they outclassed Scotland trio Marc Davis, William Thomson and Ryan Buchan 10-2 to finish second in Group A behind holders Wales.

Wales, the top seeds, completed their group commitments with a sound 10-1 win over lowly Austria to finish with six wins from six matches.

In an evening match, Malta 2 (Clayton Castaldi, Simon Camilleri and Mark Saffrett) fended off a late Ukraine rally to book one of the Last 16 berths with a 10-6 victory.

The first matches from the Last 16 are scheduled for this afternoon with two sessions starting at 2 and 4 p.m.
