A man who scratched the car of his daughter's boyfriend and then jumped bail twice who today jailed for 18 months.

Leandro Ambrogio, 45, an Italian who lives in Marsascala, had admitted early in the proceedings to have damaged the car belonging to Victor Falzon, 49, because he did not wish to have his daughter going out with a much older man. He caused damages of €1,164.

Mr Ambrogio had been granted bail until sentencing, but had not turned up for his next court appointment. The police later discovered that he had gone to Italy. He then returned to Malta and was re-arrested and charged with breaking bail conditions.

He was granted bail again and travelled abroad once more. A European arrest warrant was issued, and he was held in Italy and transferred to Malta.

In handing down sentence, the court said that while the accused had admitted the charges, he had subsequently escaped from Malta while proceedings were under way and a European Arrest Warrant even had to be issued. The accused was also a relapser and therefore, am effective prison term was appropriate,
