The first chairman of the Malta Sports Council, Michael Aquilina, passed away.

In a message of condolence, the council said Dr Aquilina was instrumental in teh development of sport in malta and was the first chairman of the council when it was set up in 2002.

"Michael was a greatly admired and respected gentleman and who had a great love for sport and in fact rendered an unselfish service to sport.

"For many years, he worked very hard to promote sport and physical education in Malta. His dedication and enterprise will surely be the best tribute of Michael’s contribution to local sports.

"His enthusiasm towards sport was high and it was always a big pleasure to discuss with him about any sporting issue," the council said.
