The Yellow Garage underneath City Gate closed down today in the first sign that the works on the City Gate projects are about to get underway.
The garage occupies part of the area under the bridge to City Gate and the former railway tunnel. As part of the project the bridge will be demolished and rebuilt and City Gate will be removed.
A number of shops in Freedom Square have also started being emptied. The shops are meant to close tomorrow evening. Like the Yellow Garage, they have been asked to evict by the Lands Department.
Hoarding will go up around Freedom Square next week closing the square to the public. The square, formed after the second world war, will be replaced by a Parliament building.
Mepa gave approval to the project yesterday.
