Studenti Demokristjani Maltin last night won their fourth consecutive election of the University Student Council (KSU) in what was a lackluster election when it came to turnout.

The group was challenged by independent leftist group Moviment Indipendenti who was contesting as a protest 'for the sake of democracy'.

SDM already had eight of its candidates elected with a vote of confidence at the KSU annual general meeting, since their opponents only fielded three candidates out of a possible eleven. The Christian Democrat student group garnered 1,261 votes while MI got 356. There were 167 mixed votes and 52 dubious votes; 46 of which invalid.

1,836 votes were cast in all, meaning this election had one of the lowest turnouts in recent years.

Now in his second term as president, Carl Grech, a fourth year law student said: “even though we had our divergences in the past weeks, I hope that in the coming year we can work on these differences and forge ahead together in the interest of all students”.

Meanwhile, MI candidates told The Times that considering they had very little time to organise a campaign, they were “very happy and satisfied with the results”.

Left leaning organisation Pulse had opted not to contest these elections in protest against the current electoral system. The group was lobbying for a proportional representation system; the current system is the first past the post system where a candidate for a particular post with the most votes gets elected.

The new KSU executive is made up of: Carl Grech as President, James Cassar as Vice President, Karl Agius as General Secretary, Martina Galea as Financial Officer, Rachel Cassar as Public Relations Officer, Matthew Bonett as Social Policy Coordinator, Roberta Rizzo as Education Coordinator, Larkin Zahra as International Officer, Francesca Scicluna as International Coordinator, Mario Cachia as Culture and Entertainment Officer and Stephanie Soler as Culture and Entertainment Coordinator.
