Marine Protected Areas (3)

What can I do for marine protected areas?

The designation of marine protected areas is not sufficient; their management is of utmost importance, and this essentially depends on each individual - on each and every one of us! Apart from the management authority, it is also the responsibility of each user to safeguard such unique and important natural areas.

Indeed, the success of protected areas as a tool for conservation depends on the success of their management. Recognition of the critical role of management to conserve biodiversity is crucial. The management of areas implies that access and activities are regulated and controlled. This is to ensure that habitats and species are safeguarded from negative impacts. It is important that that each of us, when visiting a marine protected area, follows the relevant rules and regulations. Once zonation is in place, one should be aware of the zones which are accessible and those which are strictly protected, which activities may be carried out and where. It should also be noted that a permit is to be requested from the relevant authority for certain activities within marine protected areas, such as selected research activities.

It is through the consideration of each individual that the natural heritage within Malta's marine waters is secured for the benefit of today's society and for the years to come.
