This week is EU Sustainable Energy Week, which involves a pan-European campaign that intends to bring Europe ever closer to the EU's energy policy targets, including energy efficiency, renewable energy, alternative fuels and cleaner transport.
Unfortunately, Malta is anything but a leader in these issues, in fact rather the contrary. Hopefully, the ostrich will get its head and neck out of the sand and get its act together. The current local and global economic recessions will pass and the world will recover but the environment and our health are not so malleable. We need concrete action now, even if the results will register after the tenure of the current and future governments.
The environment does not work in five-year stints but requires accurate long-term planning. This is obvious to most but, alas, not to the decision makers of our country.
