With nine games to go, Inter are currently topping the Serie A table with 60 points, one ahead of Milan and four clear of third-placed Roma with whom the champions will cross swords on Saturday in the capital.

Inter have been leading the standings practically from the word go but lately they've experienced a dip in form in the domestic scene.

But many are still asking the question whether Milan or Roma have enough momentum to eventually topple the defending champions from their perch.

Up to mid-February, the Serie A race was simply a no contest as Inter looked well on their way to retaining the league crown for a fifth year in succession.

Their supremacy was clearly reflected in a seemingly unassailable lead as all rivals had already given up hope, admitting Inter were just a few weeks away from wrapping up the Serie A title yet again.

That scenario augured well for Jose Mourinho and his men as it would have given them ample time to lay more focus on the Champions League.

But things turned out differently as Inter only managed one victory from their last seven outings while Milan and Roma profited to close in on the leaders... again the pundits were proved wrong.

Milan are unbeaten ever since going down to Inter on the 21st day while Roma have now gone 19 successive games without defeat.

Leonardo and Claudio Ranieri, the coaches at Milan and Roma respectively, have always maintained that only the Nerazzurri can throw away the scudetto. But now, what is important for the two hopefuls is to stay within sights of Inter and pounce on any slip-ups by the leaders, something which the Rossoneri failed to do last weekened when they were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Napoli.

Milan and Roma are out of Euro club competitions this season but Inter are Italy's remaining representatives on the continent after attaining qualification to the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

After years of big failures in Europe, a semi-final berth beckons for Inter after being paired with modest CSKA Moscow in the next round.

Mourinho's main priority has now become the Champions League, a trophy which has been eluding the club for 45 years.

But, in my opinion, a good run in Europe cannot act as a deterrent for Inter to retain the scudetto because Mourinho's squad is well-equipped to mount a simultaneous challenge at home and abroad.

Even in the less attractive Coppa Italia, Inter stand a good chance to reach the final as next month they take a 1-0 first leg lead to Fiorentina for the semi-final return leg.

The shrewd Mourinho knows how to attain domestic and European glory concurrently, having led Porto to back-to-back championships in Portugal, in 2003 and 2004, besides the 2003 UEFA Cup and 2004 Champions League.

Mainly, he often argues, it is a matter of self-belief and an efficient rotation policy that powers the team to finish the season on a high.

In the Serie A run-in, Milan and Roma have to play four home games each till the end of the season but Inter have five home fixtures remaining - vs Livorno, Bologna, Juventus, Atalanta and Chievo.

These games all look winnable but the same cannot be said of Inter's last four fixtures on the road, which bring there face-to-face with Roma, Fiorentina, Lazio and Siena.

Roma seem to have an easier calendar as they host Inter, Atalanta, Sampdoria and Cagliari and travel to Bologna, Bari, Lazio, Parma and Chievo. Much of Roma's chances depend on Saturday's outcome.

Injury-plagued Milan's last four home outings will be against Lazio, Catania, Fiorentina and Juventus and their next trips away from the San Siro will be to Parma, Cagliari, Sampdoria, Palermo and Genoa.

No doubt, the pressure will be there on all three contenders but Milan and Roma have nothing to lose at this stage.

Roma, in particular, have done pretty well to stay in the hunt as few had given them a chance following a poor start to the season.

Meanwhile, Inter's rivals will be hoping the Nerazzurri will prolong their stay in Europe and, perhaps, shift more focus on the Champions League. That could enhance their chances of success in the Serie A... Mourinho may think differently though.

Serie A statistics

1st draw at home for Palermo after seven straight wins as on Saturday the Sicilians came from a goal down to share the spoils with Inter. Jose Mourinho's side have collected only one win and five draws in their last seven outings but nearest pursuers Milan did not make home soil count as they could not go beyond a 1-1 home draw with Napoli to stay one point adrift of the champions.

2nd win on the trot for Fiorentina as they annihilated Genoa 3-0 to revive their chances of making a top-four finish. Genoa have so far registered only two wins on the road with their most recent one coming against Bologna (3-1) on the seventh day. Since then, Genoa only managed three draws in 10 away fixtures.

3 teams - Inter, Palermo and Sampdoria - are still unbeaten at home. Samp left it late to hand Juventus their 10th defeat of the season. Sampdoria's fourth straight home win propelled them to fourth place, level on points with Palermo and two above Juve.

4 winless games in a row (one draw and three defeats) have hindered Cagliari's chances to book an Europa League berth. On Sunday, the Sardinians were floored by two first-half Lazio goals to suffer their fourth home defeat of the term - the first since going down to Chievo (1-2) on the seventh day. For Lazio this was only their second victory since new coach Edy Reja took over from Davide Ballardini on the 24th day.

5 penalties were awarded by referees last weekend. Maxi Lopez drew Catania back on level terms from the spot and Alberto Gilardino doubled Fiorentina's lead against Genoa with a 73rd-minute penalty. Diego Milito gave Inter a headstart by scoring an 11th-minute penalty. In Roma-Udinese, the two sides were awarded a penalty each from which Mirko Vucinic and Antonio Di Natale made no mistake.

12 points collected by in-form Siena in their last six outings. In a vital basement clash, Alberto Malesani's team edged Bologna to move off bottom place but they are still four points away from safety. For Bologna this was only their second defeat in their last 10 games.

24 goals were scored on the 29th day: 16 coming from the hosts and the remaining eight from the visitors. Foreign players contributed with 11 goals while there were 13 first-half goals last weekend. Total number of goals scored so far is 743. Udinese forward Antonio Di Natale consolidated his position at the top of the scorers list by hitting a double against Roma. He is now four goals clear of nearest pursuer Diego Milito, of Inter.
