Cruise terminal operator Viset said today that despite itinerary changes by some cruise lines it expected to record an increase in passenger numbers this year compared to last year.

Bookings for 2011 were still being received and it would be premature to comment further on any final figures at this stage, the company said.

Total cruise passenger traffic in Malta for 2009 amounted to 439,630, down by 20.9 per cent over 2008.

Viset said that Norwegian Cruise Line would still be calling in Malta this year, albeit at much reduced numbers due to a diversification of its itinerary on previous years. NCL has opted to use Venice as its homeport for Eastern Mediterranean cruises.

Another cruise line, Costa, would be increasing its calls in Malta this year but reducing them next year as a result of itinerary changes.

Viset said its chairman, CEO and a senior executive director recently attended the Seatrade Cruise Shipping Miami - the annual major cruise line industry event.

Their objective was to meet key executives from the major cruise lines and reaffirm their commitment to long term relationships, with particular focus on lines which had either reduced their visits or ceased visiting Malta altogether.

"The uniqueness of the Port of Valletta, passenger satisfaction ratings and recognition of Valletta's value based port services and facilities, were echoed by all levels of senior management within the cruise lines," Viset said.

"Cruise line ratings received for the Port of Valletta, Malta reveal high scores which indeed exceed the standards set by the lines," Viset said.

"The Mediterranean is set to become increasingly competitive and operators in other ports continuously attempt to win business away from Malta.

"Sensitive to the requirements of the lines, Viset will continue with its business development initiatives and contacts with the cruise line companies to secure increased and new business for 2012 and beyond," the company added.
