Rise in sexually transmitted diseases -12 HIV cases reported last year
A total of 143 cases of sexually transmitted diseases were reported last year, Health Minister Joseph Cassar said.
Replying to a parliamentary questions by Labour MP Anthony Agius Decelis, Dr Cassar said there were 61 cases of chlamydia, 63 cases of gonorrhoea and 19 cases of syphilis.
He said the numbers were higher than in the past five years.
The minister also said that last year 12 cases of HIV were reported.
He said that €42,000 were allocated for educational campaigns on sexually transmitted diseases this year. Some of the funds were from an EU project which focused specifically on HIV, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C.
The Health Promotion Department, the minister said, planned to employ a number of health promotion officers one of whom would be working specifically on sexual health.

some of you guys seems to be blaming the foreigners for bringing this deadly disease to Malta, but how do you know that the Maltese themselves are not partly to blame. Be fair>

actually it is probable that prostitutes are more aware of the risks and being "pros" would use condoms...it is more likely that people do not use them "in the heat of the moment"

As a frequent tourist i think your government and the health department should distribute free of charge french letters (condoms to U) and please don't always blame it on the foreigners, i know for a fact alot of transmitted diseases in Soho orignates from either the Greek cypriots, the Maltese or Sicilains amongst others., its up to the individual to practice safe sex, it should also be an open subject at all the schools above a certain age. In Britain we have at nearly all public establishments french letter machines always at hand in case one is caught short, including most Universities.

the fact whether the bearer of the disease is an immigrant or not is irrelevant. the same precautions apply whether partner is maltese or foreign - european, african, whatever. or is anybody thinking that euopeans and maltese are immune from STDs/STIs?

I'm appalled by such narrow mindedness, for starters I'm surprised no-one even bothered to mention prostitution as one cause of the problem which leads to the next incorrect assumption as to imply that most STD's were transmitted by men.
Let me break two things to you, females are as much likely as their male counterparts for the spread of STD's and secondly, to my knowledge not all those infected with an STD are not even aware of carrying it, some just happen to be carriers.
These two factors further stress the invaluability of sexual education from an early age.

Stop hiding the truth. How many of these cases are illegal immigrants ? Or we still don't keep track of diseases among illegal immigrants.

@ S.Calleja - exactly as you said. it becomes a social problem and then as usual Gonzi gets the blame because of people not practising safe sex....next people will be blaming Gonzi for not offering contraceptives for free and also good quality on demand!!!!

Let's stop hiding behind the bush. Not all illegal immigrants have HIV or other sexual deceases but a lot of them do. On the other hand I blame our government for not checking every illegal immigrant upon arrival (as far as I know ) for such deceases. It might be politically incorrect but it's the right thing to do. You come into my house uninvited, you have to abide by my rules. No matter what the EU or the bleeding hearts say, protecting the Maltese public is number one. As for the rest act responsibly and use protection. I do think that both public schools and private schools should include sex education as one of their subjects. Knowledge and protection is the best defense. Be responsible, always use protection.

why is it always the authorities that get the blame. people should take responsibility for their actions. safe sex is not something hard to practise!!!!

Well, they don't. And because of their irresponsibility it's not just their own problem, but it's a social problem too, because it costs taxpayer's money to give them treatments.

Its not just about education.
There has been a large number of reported and unreported rapes commited by illegal immigrants over the last few years.
I am not trying to insinuate that all illegal immigrants have HIV or are rapists but there are a great number who have HIV and there have been many cases of rape involving them.

How do you know how many Unreported rapes by there are?? You should inform the police if you know of any unreported rapes!!!!
Unsafe sex is the problems.....I can bet you that probably none of these STDs were as a result of rape!! Of course unsafe sex with anyone coming from a country with higher rates of STDs and HIV makes it even riskier sex!
So yes...it is practically ALL ABOUT EDUCATION!!!!

The fact that you know about these rapes and did not report them is highly irresponsible. What would you do if you are a passenger in a car and the driver is about to hit someone you have managed to spot? Say nothing, let him kill him and then go complaining about it?

€42,000 for educational campaigns related to STD, and €500,000 for a three day visit by the Pope (who we all know is convinced that not using contraception is the key to less STDs). I am undecided whether to smile or weep.

I cannot but condemn the Authority for keeping a closed public information on such a matter, we have all these TV stations we talk so much and yet we did little to show some horrible photos of men and woman with this diseases. At least give a warning and then show such photos, I know they are not nice to see but the public needs to be shocked so that he or she will use preventing measures.

€42,000 invested in in educational campaigns on sexually transmitted diseases! Is this a joke? If we are that miserably poor, how can we afford to spend 80 million on the Valletta tennis court and parliament-on-stilts? Dr Gonzi you need a reality check! And where are all the promised millions coming from the EU?
Robert Azzopardi

Well the reason is simple, a slight increase in awarness leading to more cases reported but not a true increase as STDs as the real numbers have probably been rampant for a while, we simply refuse to see it. @Government Please make some serious effort on Sexual Health and Sexual education, to begin at an early age, and the provision of awarness.

I wish I could post one of my usual tongue in cheek / sarcastic comments, but this news is sad end investing just €42K on it is little and shameful.
