Enemalta planning to sell 9,000 surplus meters
9,000 electricity meters bought by Enemalta in 2008 have remained unused and will be sold after a call for tenders, Finance Minister Tonio Fenech said in Parliament.
Replying to a parliamentary question, he said the meters are not being used because of the programme for the installation of Smart meters.
The electronic meters had cost Enemalta €178,489.

G. Cutajar.
I reiterate my plea which, if I'm not mistaken was never carried in this blog.
Give J. Martinelli an official representation of the Maltese Government in Canada, so that he can stop ' interfering' in arguments meted out by locals be they nationalists or labourites or others.

€178,489 for 9000 meters means that they cost lest than €20 each. Which means to say that we pay for not just the electrical units we use but we are also paying out of our already bleeding noses for the "service" whic only costs €20. On the new bill it is listed as €32.59 Kera/Service charge according to the Arms leaflet we received.
I say Service charge for what??????????? For installing a €20 meter??????? Daylight robbery for a miserable service. The same for the water meter and Go telephone line.

As usual, the self-appointed Minister for Favourable Propaganda from across the ocean gives us another puerile red herring in an attempt to obfuscate the real problems that we have under this government. The REAL problem, Mr Martinelli, is that we, the citizens of the Maltese Islands, are being expected to finance the crass inefficiencies of Enemalta and the Government.
Contrary to what you claim, 'mismanagement' includes the non-collection of close to €200,000,000 in bills that are still outstanding to Enemalta. Mismanagement is having 9000 extra meters on stock - some 5% of ALL households! EXTORTION is charging annual rent for similar meters at a rate that is more than the actual cost! ARROGANCE is claiming that the new exorbitant charges are due to the international price of oil!
Little wonder that I continually congratulate you on the excellent job you are doing at shooing sensible floating voters AWAY from your favourite party. Please, DO go on! ;-)

Hello J Martinelli, Ma nistax nifhem kif kull darba li tikteb, dejjem trid izzeffen fin-nofs u tikkritika lill-Partit Laburista. Kif ma tammettix li dan kien kaz iehor ta' tberbiq ta' flus mit-taxxi taghna lkoll, minn Gvern imhawwad u minghajr energija biex imexxi kif suppost. Mhux veru li biex tiehu s-servizzi tad-dawl u ilma, fiz-zmien il-Lejber kont trid tistenna xhur u snin, anzi ghalkemm il-Lejber kien qassam eluf kbar ta' plots lit-tfal tal-haddiema u kulhadd kien jibni d-dar tieghu, il-Lejber kien jghaddi s-servizzi tal-elettriku u tal-ilma qabel ma jkunu inbnew id-djar u qabel ma jigu rrangati t-toroq.
Ghandna ragun nghidu li zmien il-Lejber kien zmien ta' gid kbir ghaliex fi zmienu inqata l-faqar, dahlet edukazzjoni obligatorja u imbnew skejjel kwazi f'kull belt u rahal. Dahlu s-servizzi socjali kollha li ghadna ingawdu sal-lum. Sirna poplu u nazzjon maghrufin mad-dinja kollha, u issa resqin lejn faqar kbir. Nistennew ir-rizultat mill-kumitat tal-finanzi pubblici fil-parlament dwar it-tarznari halli naraw it-tberbiq hazin ta' flus il-Poplu Malti, li minhabba fih ghalqu t-tarznari.

@J. martinelli
You must be very happy in Canada since you will not be paying for such Gonzipn deficiencies with your W & E bills.
You might still if you like send over a donation to make up for such lack of Foresight....

@J Martinelli: Your intelligence is extraterrestrial definitely. Remember that Enemalta should know how many households and applications for new ones there are. Therefore those who were calculating the order should have known exactly how many to order. Ordering 9000 extra is a total waste of taxpayer money. These meters devaluate as time passes. So they end up costing more to the taxpayers. No wonder we are paying high utility bills just to make good for the inefficiencies at Enemalta. J. Martinelli, have you ever heard about systems like JIT or lean inventory systems? Just to illuminate your blindfolded partisan thinking, these systems save magnate companies millions of dollars (e.g. Toyota, Dell, etc.).

Of many comments, this must be the smartest, "Who was the SMART chap that originally bought such a surplus amount of meters?"
Absolutely right! Enemalta had no business keeping a surplus amount of meters on hand. It should have adopted the old policies during Socialist times when applying for a service of any kind, one had to wait months and in some cases years, for delivery of the service!
Why? Because meeting public demand expeditiously was a luxury the government of that time made sure that nobody became accustomed to. Indeed the government was so frugal at the time that it even controlled what food one could buy, when and how much!
It's a wonder how some still refer to those years as the 'wonder years'!
Mismanagement is not having the means of satisfying public demand.

As usual Martinelli from far-away Canada has to lie about PL to defend his pn government. The fact is that the INCOMPETENT Enemalta top brass were appointed by the equally INCOMPETENT Eddie Fenech Adami and Gonzi and they are responsible for all the mess our country is in. Why don't you come back to Malta and enjoy the pinch Martinelli? Then perhaps your comments and defense of the indefensible may perhaps be taken with a sack of salt, maybe, perhaps.

What are we the POPOLIN suppose to do with them??? melt them??? tamper with them???
Lots of momey going to waste, and then some poor soul does not pay his bill, for God knows what ever reasoon, and the goverment cuts there electric, and i say the goverment as they are the ones who appoint people who decide this things.

Interesting. This puts the cost of each meter at 19.8e. The service charges we all pay includes the rent for the meter. This means that each and every one of us more than covers the cost of the meter within one year. The rest is all money filched from our pockets.
Interesting. That makes the cost of every meter at 19.8e. The service charges we receive include the rent. This means that each citizen fully pays for his meter within one year. The rest is all money taken out of his pocket

That is what has been happening my friend. We are being ROBBED by the Enemalta and the Government INCOMPETENTS. p.s. remember that apart from this we have to pay for the wastage of water and electricity by the thousands of illegal immigrants.

Will these surplus meters be sold at a profit?
Who was the SMART chap that originally bought such a surplus amount of meters?
Is there no accountability anywhere for decisions taken at Enemalta?
Nobody seems to bother that the consumers have such charges for deficiencies included with their utility bills with the excuse of increases in the price of oil from overseas.....
