The Department for Environmental Health warned today that Golden Lion Rice Vermicelli should not be consumed because of the possibility of the presence of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) not authorised in the European Union.
The rice is produced in China and comes in 400g packets.

This GMO talk by the commenters remind me of children crying over lollipops.
The problem is CHINA not GMOs.
For heavens' sake, quit acting silly all of you.
This happens every time some new technology is in use. Nuclear energy? X-Rays? Mobile Telephony? Fire...(witchcraft)?

Shame on you Mr. Dalli. My first reaction was; 'Is this really happening??'

Is it not bad enough that we buy electrical goods from China, which have every possibility of electrocuting us due to their poor construction? Is it not bad enough that we buy our children toys made in China, which are held together by sharp metal spikes and painted with lead paint? Are we now determined to kill our children or ourselves by feeding them rice produced in China? Take my advice, if you see anything, which says, 'Produced in China' give it a very wide berth for the sake of your health!

I fully concur with you. I wish to add that even the clothes for example, that are made in China should be checked too as we would never know what kind of dye (its content) is used.

We have heard a lot recently about the approval of GMOs by the Maltese EU Commissioniar, John Dalli, but very few understand the implications of such a move.
Cross contamination of non-GM crops is a reality and to date, their is no evidence that the approved modified genes will not cross from one variety to an other.
In his twenty days in office, Dalli has already approved the potato variety Amflora,
Next steps expected are the re-approval of the GM maize MON 810 (which would mean that the cultivation bans in Germany and France would fall) and the approval of two more maize varieties by Pioneer (Bt11) and Syngenta (1507). Both maize varieties produce Bacillus thuringiensis insecticides, with possible adverse effects on soil life, non-target insects and aquatic ecosystems.
Moreover, the EU is debating how to reform the decision-making process for authorising the cultivation of GM crops. Following a proposal launched by the Dutch and Austrian governments, the Commission is considering the re-nationalisation of GM crops authorisations..

I wonder what Commissioner John Dalli has to say about this, since his very first action as Commissioner was to bow to commercial interests and authorise the introduction of certain GMOs in the EU.
