Shop till you drop
Video: Mark Zammit Cordina
Many Maltese went to Sliema this weekend visiting the newly-opened 60 million euro project The Point, at Tigné Point, Malta's largest shopping mall.
Home to 49 retail units, many with fashion flagship stores, The Point offers a car-free environment.
British retail giant Debenhams, with 2,800 square metres of retail space, is the largest tenant on site. This anchor store, which is located on the Piazza and Level -1 is surrounded by well-known brands including Massimo Dutti, Mango, Gant, Lacoste, Nike, Bata, Women's Secret, Sterling Jewellers, Springfield, Guess, Prénatal, Liu Jo, Cioconat Lounge, Café Cuba, Reebok, Sophia, Fotovision Imaging, Piccinino, Sun Lab and Tommy Hilfiger Denim.
Level -1 has Terranova, Oysho, Marks & Spencer Simply Food, Pull & Bear, Mayoral, Franks, Stradivarius, Intercomp, Esprit, Agenda Bookshop, Piazza Italia, New Look, Segue and Thirty Six. Level -2 will include an extensive Chain Supermarket and brands including Adidas, Baby Phat, Junior's, Aldo, United Colours of Benetton, Sisley, The Kitchen Store, Lotto, Papillon and Millie's Cookies.
The Point is served by over 1,000 basement car parking spaces including ample allocation for car parking for disabled people.

'Shop till you drop' goes the title.
Goes without saying - only if you can afford it!

I think so far the project looks good from the outside.
My question is why an indoor dark mall?
Why not have designed a pedestrian outdoor walkway like the Ramblas in BCN or Republic Street in Valletta. Cannot wait to come back home and visit.

A year ago we had a happy holiday in Sliema and were fascinated by the Point development. So now it is open and well done to all concerned. But beware! Here on the UK Kent coast we had three thriving small towns Margate, Ramsgate and Broadstairs. They were busy with residents and tourists who supported the small shops and individual traders. Three years ago a major out of town shopping complex, Westwood Cross, was opened. All the big retail chains moved out there. Their customers followed. Without customers the small shops closed. Margate now has around 40% of all retail premises boarded up. Dereliction is a permanent problem. I hope I am wrong, but Malta, this could happen to you!

Having reviewed the video several times , there is practically 90% + point-less coverage on the Apartment Blocks .
The POINT, as shown here , seems all concentrated around an Oval ,and this definately is not a SHOPPING MALL , although it has quite a SUBSTANTIAL number of retail outlets .
It would be more appropriately defined as A SHOPPING ROTUNDA !

Still a rip off anyway like everything else in Malta..they spend so much money on crap than actual things that are important for the people like roads and more things to do here.. noo they build the "biggest" shoppin mall.. And shops are just stupidly priced yet again.. Well done!.....

I think it was much needed as disabled people can roam about freely without having to double check where they are putting their feet or wheelchairs due to potholes and not to mention the inaccessible shops in the rest of sliema area.

Well done to all concerned. Not been there yet but judging by the video it looks great. I just noticed a lack of greenery and plants. Despite that, I'm sure it will be a very pleasant place for locals and visitors to visit.

Some of you guys are incredible here!!! My boyfriend has been transfered from Sicily to work on this shopping centre and has been working hard on it for over a year now, can't you appreciate the work that is being done to give something to the people here? Then is summer everyone is complaining about the shops being too full or the parking problem for shopping! Why can't you just shut up and be grateful for what is being done to make Malta a better place? ! ? !

the shops at the point were closed when this video was taken on sunday. Unfortunatly the law is such that it will not be open on sundays at all . Having said that it was packed on saturday and very nice it was too. The usual prophets of doom for whom all change is wrong and must be stopped can crow till the cows come home but the truth is the mall and piazza look great and the vast majority who went on the day were generally impressed.

A perfect example of maltese gemgem. Pleasing certain people is just impossible. Just to get the record straight - I am NOT a shopaholic, I do NOT like shopping centres and neither do i like cities to a certain degree. I have been known to totally bypass Oxford Street on my visits to London since I hate shopping so much. I am the outdoor type. In fact, I don't think I'll visit Tigne Point for at least 6 months until the hype calms down, even though I live just down the road. However, facts are facts and one just cannot complain about the immensely high standards reached. From what I've seen (and heard), the place is totally magnificent.
An englishman once told me (I don't think the administrator will publish this bit) "you maltese complain so much that if you were to sh&t gold, you'd complain that your a&se hurts!"

The title is a misnomer as all the shops were shut, except for the cafe, yesterday ( Sunday).

It keeps amazing me how people find fault in everything. First and foremost, this footage was filmed yesterday, on a Sunday, when shops are closed. On Saturday, the place was full of people and shopping was in full swing.
@Godfrey Fenech ....it's true that some brands already exist in Sliema and in other places but:
1) these are flagship stores - much bigger and offering more variety and
2) If the tenants who own the franchises opted to invest in the Point, who are you to tell them it was a wrong decision. I'm sure they did their homework well.
With regards to parking, if you did have the opportunity to read about the project you would have known that the 1000 parking spaces are exclusively for those visiting The Point. residents have their own private parking spaces. In this day and age, when people do something, they do it properly you know.
And with regards to comments about the waste of space or small areas - don't trust this footage because footage can never replace the reality of spaces. It's very obvious that who commented hasn't been yet.

So there will be a car free environment for the people shopping at the point, so finally someone has realised that it is important to have a car free zone, free from the dangers of traffic and pollution while people go about doing their chores.
And what about the residents along Sliema, Gzira, St Julians and beyond who have to bear all that traffic passing through their roads so that clients can arrive at THE POINT. We will have a nice car free, pollution free zone at our homes - VIVA SAHHITNA

Some of the comments down under are so negative .
Yet ones goes abroad and comes back showing amazement at how big were the shopping malls visited abroad .
What on earth do these individuals want one cannot understand .
It seems that progress made in Malta is all negative for them .
If you pessimists dont like it here - just pack up and leave this Island .
You seem to find all the negatives in everything done in Malta , yet you never give a hint of how things should be done better.
You are always ready to criticise yet never give solutions.
Are you all Perfect ?

Hey people this project was studied and market tested before a penny went into the plan. The marketing study was aimed at TOURIST retail business. Do you get the Point at Tigné Point ? They wouldn't build a huge Mall for Maltese shoppers alone. They know we'll never "shop till we drop" we are rather more PRICE conscious shoppers. Unless of coarse they "Drop the prices while we shop" somewhere else. hahahaha!!!!! Sahha hbib Maltin.

So the times of malta is saying ' shop till you drop' and i tell you that most people are dropping when they see the elec/water bills. Isn't that right? Joking apart, this country is full of shops. This centre is just a few metres away from the famous strand shopping complex and hence is in direct competition.Few will argue that prices will be reasonable cos of such competition. i very much doubt it. Anyway good luck to everybody at this new shopping complex. may it be fruitful for the whole country in terms of jobs and money

Shop till you stop. We were forced out of the point by a security guard yelling "go back from where you came from" we were shouted at just beyong the side entrance. After spending thousands of euros on marketing campaigns, the point was closed at around 6pm. At least they could have just let us do some window shopping. If thats the case we'd rather stick to baystreet

HIHIHI .....LOL it cost me 2.85 for just over an hour!!!!! And I was not that impressed with the place. As the readers said before....the brands are already in the locality. My choice for shopping will always remain The Plaza. Then my other choice....Baystreet. With a good coffee shop and all my favorite brands under one roof.

You forgot to mention the parking nightmare in the 'article'.
If 49 retail units make Tigne Point the largest retail outlet in Malta - il veru nifirhu bix-xejn f'dan il-pajjiz!
Most of the brands already existed in Sliema - a few metres away actually, so according to me this is simply going to drain an area from shoppers into another more fashionable one (for now) whilst further exarbitating the traffic and parking problem.
I guess the 1000 parking spaces will mostly be used by residents, maintenance and retail shop workers. in the articicle you should have mentioned what percentage of the 1000 spaces will be continually free to be used by visiting customers.

Of course BlueWaters and Westfield are much bigger and better but be thankful that something at least is being done. When Malta becomes as big and as rich as England, the maybe we'll have BlueWaters too, but in the meantime let's not spoil the little bit that's being done!
We complain when nothing happens, yet when something does happen we compare it to what's happening in the UK, a country in which part of the tourism relies on such shopping arcades and shops!
Ara veru Maltin intom, tgergru fuq KOLLOX!
