A new public library has been inaugurated in Cospicua replacing that which for many years had been administered by the city’s primary school.
The new library will be administered by the council and the Libraries and Archives Department.
Parliamentary Secretary for Local Councils Chris Said said the project, completely financed by the council, showed the importance the council gave to education.
He praised the initiative taken by a number of councils to set up a local library and said that in the past year, 170,672 books were borrowed from regional libraries. Another 267,671 books were borrowed from local ones. The libraries administered by councils loaned a total of 438,343 books.
He said that the fund allocation to councils for libraries had doubled and councils were given vouchers to buy books from Maltese publishers.
