A 41-year-old drug user yesterday pleaded not guilty to trafficking in about 40 grammes of cannabis over the past four months.

Brian Mangion of Qormi denied trafficking in the drug, trafficking in heroin, being in possession of the drug in circumstances indicating it was not for his exclusive use and relapsing.

Defence lawyer Giannella Caruana Curran informed the court that she would not be asking for bail as she had been told by Police Inspector Victor Aquilina that there were a number of witnesses still to be heard.

Inspector Aquilina asked for Mr Mangion's assets to be frozen for the duration of the case, which request was upheld.

Dr Caruana Curran requested that her client be allowed to keep by law €13,976 per year in order to sustain himself. The request was also upheld.

Magistrate Giovanni Grixti remanded Mr Mangion in custody and ordered that the witnesses be brought to testify in the first sitting.

Police Inspector Jesmond Borg also prosecuted.
