The secondary schools national Film competition organised by the Malta Cine Circle is again being funded by the Vodafone Malta Foundation.
Held every two years, the competition is open to all secondary schools, with the aim of encouraging media awareness and love for cinematography, enhancing individual skills as well as team work, and push the use of film production within the national curriculum.
“The Vodafone Malta Foundation’s support has been pivotal to the organisation of this year’s edition of the competition,” said Vincent Lungaro-Mifsud, chairman of the Malta Cine Circle.
“For us, it is of crucial importance to keep up the momentum we have achieved over the past years, in order to promote film-making, creativity, research and art among young people.”
The productions submitted for the competition treat a number of areas including social life in Malta, Malta’s heritage and history, environmental issues and issues that concern young people. This year submissions could also focus on combating poverty and social exclusion, in line with this year’s focus by the European Union.
Gemma Mifsud Bonnici, chairman of the Vodafone Malta Foundation said: “As with all the creative arts, we feel it is imperative to promote film and cinematography as early as possible during school years. This national competition is an important means to achieve this, and augurs well for a better understanding of media and communications.”
Participating students were given training in the production of short film with a short series of workshops held prior to the filming exercise. The winning teams of students will clinch prizes in the name of their school. The Awards Night scheduled for May 28 will present prizes for best production, editing, direction, photography, sound, best script and best acting performance.
Since its inception in 1952, the Malta Cine Circle has organised several national and international competitions including the National Film Competition and the Golden Knight Malta International Film Festival.
