New patrol boats commissioned
Four new inshore patrol boats formally entered service with the Armed Forces of Malta during a commissioning ceremony at Haywharf this morning.
The 40-tonne boats, 'dressed overall' for the occasion, were built by Austal in Australia in a €9.5m project, three quarters of which was funded by the EU.
Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi and Brigadier Martin Xuereb presided the ceremony during which the AFM pennant was raised on the four boats while their crews stood to attention.
The boats then cruised from their base to Grand Harbour and back.
Dr Gonzi in an address underlined the importance for Malta to have a modern and efficient maritime squadron because of its responsibilities for maritime safety and in order to counter smuggling and illegal migration.
The boats are the latest step in the modernisation of the Maritime Squadron, which, over recent years also commissioned a Diciotti class offshore patrol boat and two Protector Class boats which are slightly bigger than the new boats.
The Maritime Base also features a new, extended quay and new quarters.

Good choice of supplier I think. Must have upset our EU "friends" though who not only have been building boats for centuries, but footed much of the bill!

I have become apolitical due to the illegal immigration crisis. I will only resume voting in an election when there is a politician who has the guts to repatriate all the illegal immigrants and close down all the detention and open centres. Nuff said.

@M Cassar
Why don't you go for politics and offer your services and sort the illegal immigration.
You seem smart enough to tackle Ghaddafi and the North African neighbours.

Mary Ann Borg JM declared he will limit the number of how much illegal immigrants can come in. Once that limit is reached and we simply can't take anymore they will have to find somewhere else to stay. This will immediately give us a peace of mind that if 1 million african immigrants come we will not accept them like Dr.Gonzi is doing apart from the fact that over 90% of the illegals that are here are all economic migrants and did not claim asylum so ask your leader...why are they still here why haven't they been repatriated as they should have been according to law.

Well done to the present government and to the our Armed Forces of Malta. Of course, we only hear of the illegal immigrants that make it ashore. What we don't hear of are the ones that are deterred from coming to our shores and this is due to the diligent, 24/7 job of our boys in green (or shall I say Blue -Navy?) uniform. Illegal immigrants continue to come in as they do in Italy - with a much larger navy than ours- Spain etc. And to the two blokes who have sowed doubts in Malta new capabililties I ask two simple questions: Now what would your Joseph do if ever he gets to power? Will he go out himself, or perhaps send Scheberras Trigona and Toni Abela to stop the immigrants from reaching our shores?
Well done PN and I'm sure the Maritime squadron, together with the Air Wing, will be pleased to have new tools to combat both illegal immigration and the constant back-stabbing of the Italians.

Would Dr. Gonzi kindly tell us how the government and the AFM are countering illegal migration? As far as we know, when they come here they stay here, and when they're in trouble we go get them here. I believe such a situation can be called anything but countering !!

Counter migration ? Are you sure Dr.Gonzi or do you mean facilitate migration as has been done up till now. Obviously I hope you speak the truth and bent on countering these illegal operations.
