Court confiscates €43,000
A court this morning ordered the confiscation of €43,000 belonging to two men from Cameroon after they were found trying to carry large amounts of cash out of Malta.
Tessa Serge Stephen, 32, who is resident in Paris, was found at the airport to be carrying €32,500 when the law establishes a limit of €10,000 in cash which can be taken out of Malta.
A further €30,500 were found in the possession of Tchebo Nyapsi Bernard, 31 as he was leaving for Rome, where he lived.
The two said they had worked in Malta as a car dealer and a singer respectively.
The court ordered the confiscation of €22,500 belonging to Mr Stephen and also fined him €8,125 while €20,500 were confiscated from Mr Bernard, who was also fined €7,625.
During the arraignment, Mr Bernard claimed in court that he had been beaten by a number of policemen at police headquarters and he had suffered injuries to his chest and said.
Magistrate Giovanni Griscti immediately ordered an inquiry.

@J Martinelli
The court confiscated the money because they were found trying to carry large amounts of cash out of Malta, when the law establishes a limit of €10,000 in cash which can be taken out of Malta and it`s not mentioned if they had permit or not to work in Malta.

If the citizens from Cameroon were free to conduct business, make a profit and export their earnings, why do you think that the Courts ordered their money confiscated? If these people had the necessary permits, the courts would not have confiscated their money.
If these two were 'hired' illegally, will the employers be charged? - That's the question you should have asked.
Ditto to Joseph Cachia.
Denis Catania: What's not good for the Maltese economy? Better be concerned about the economy of your country which has precipitated the world's recession.

actually it was confiscated because it exceeded the money they can take out of malta, not because they were not working legally.

All this money leaving the Islands is not good for Malta's economy. Ask the bankers about all the money transfers out of Malta by illegal immigrants. Don't worry about the U.S.A, worry about China and Europe (Greece). Canada you have nothing to worry as long as you ride our coattails and keep growing trees for America's bright future.

Martinelli, people from outside the eu are not supposed to be issued with permits to work in Malta and neither to be employed. So I asked the right questions. If they were employed they would have been employed illegally and then yes, their employers should also be brought to book.
Sean, when are you going to start defending Malta and the Maltese citizens from the foreigners especially the Africans that you hold so close to your heart? All the money was confiscated so they did not convince the court that they got it through legal means.

No sean, foreigners from other countries do not have a right to a permit except form other eu countries. When are you ever going to stop defending foreigners who commit crimes in Mallta? I expect any foreign criminal to be kicked out of Malta after serving his sentence as I expect a Maltese criminal to be kicked out of a foreign country after serving his sentence, but you are only one-track minded where foreigners especially illegal immigrants are concerned.

What a pity mess MALTA is in.
All these obscured foreigners are let in and left to roam our MALTA at their
leisure to commit illegal acts with out any surveillance .
As if in MALTA there are'nt car dealers or singers more that we have rabbit's
Living in ROME car dealing/stealing business is far more profitable than in MALTA and
singers can do much better in PARIS nightclubs
Thank GOD we have some serious custom officers at airport / ports.

Since when are persons from Cameroun being given permission to work in Malta as singers and car dealers?
Did the ETC give them permission?
If not, are they going to be arraigned for working without a permit in Malta?
