Mtarfa students reach for the sky
Students at Mtarfa Boys Secondary School have been given a new choice for their extra-curricular activities - flying.
The school, part of St Nicholas College, has teamed up with Diamond Flight Training and formed an aero club which will give the students a taste of flying.
Headmaster Jean Pierre Micallef said the initiative had been enthusiastically received by the students and 70 had applied to join.
An initial group of 15 has been chosen. They will be attending lessons on aeronautics, going on tours around the airport and its facilities, and also experiencing flying with the flight school.
Mr Micallef also thanked Parliamentary Secretary Clyde Puli, who was also present at the launch today, for his "relentless efforts to help the school make a quantum leap".
Describing it as a unique and innovative project, Marco Ciliberti, director of Diamond Flight Training, said this was a historic day because this was the first time a state school was giving its students the opportunity to gain aviation knowledge.

Diamond Flight Training does wish to point out that following the initiataive taken by St. Nicholas College, the invitation has been extended - prior to the recent Learning Expo - to all other secondary schools in Malta, including St. Theresa Secondary School and hence it rests with the school adminsitration to take up this initiative for the bebefit of its students.

Congratulations for such sublime idea,an experience not to be missed. At least now state school students can have a go at flying and I am sure will obtain the same results as the ones who pay for flying instructions privately.

I am no flying enthusiast, yet I still feel I should greet this new experience to the upcoming youth.
However it is getting to be a nuisance on weekends before noon, to have a single engine airplane humming overhead in areas of Hamrun, Qormi, Siggiewi and the areas close too.
Why not they do their lessons on the sea in case of an accident.

Great! Now how about extending this opportunity to well chosen secondary school students in other state schools? Why was this opportunity not also offered to the Girls at St. Theresa Secondary School, for example?
