Maltese soldiers recalled from Greece after clash with civilians
The Armed Forces have recalled to Malta five soldiers who were involved in a clash with Greek civilians yesterday.
The Department of Information said the troops were serving on the Greek island of Lesvos on Frontex Joint-Operation "Poseidon".
The incident happened while the soldiers were off duty.
The DOI said further investigations are continuing.
The Greek police are also investigating.

I think you should know the real version before you comment such things on these soldiers. i think everyone should have a bit of free time, they can't work 24 hrs, can't these soldiers have a bit of social life? i think they were in away place and i think they defented them self and our country. i say a big well done to the soldiers.

Which part of "social life" means "fighting" to you?
Also soldiers on sworn to fight terrorism or against an enemy country, both of which do not apply to Greece.
Keep your blind and unreasonable patriotism to yourself, will you?

All this goes to prove, if you mess with the AFM then your going to get hurt ! you have some of the most proffessional and well disciplined soldiers anywhere in the world !
This is just one incident, when i was in Germany in the 70`s, like Mr Forte say`s, fights happened all the time, i think its all to do with testosterone and the desire of young males to mark their territory, let em scrap, they may be killed in the line of duty tomorrow !

Comments like yours go on to prove the imminent demise of the AFM's competence.
Since when is "eye for eye" considered discipline? Discipline is refraining oneself from instinctive behavior.
Mind not twisting wrongdoings into excuses for patriotism?

As far as I know all services members, are responsible 24 / 7,even when they are off duty, and without uniform. Imagine a policeman on his off time, sees somebody doing a crime and do not stop him. If a am not mistaken they all have an Identity Card to show their kind of duties, and they can use it even when in civil cloths. Now the BIG question is... Are they being paid for such responsibilities ? That is why I agree that these dedicated citizens should have their own representatives. If the word " Union " hurts somebody, use another word. like I did, but sure they need protection ,like they are doing.......... protecting us.

Yes Mr Forte, that was in the past as well said by you.
By the way, I too used to to sell chewing gum and cigarettes to the sailors at at strada stretta and, yes not like today Just looking at it makes me very sad indeed, btw maybe we both know each other also, but any way good luck mate.

@ G. Mangion........If you read my comment again you find that I was commenting at the past,or some 40 years ago. Still if you understood me other way, I say sorry.Today the world has been changed, and a fight can start even if somebody looks at you twice. Strada Stretta was worst than Banzunetta. I use to sell chewing gum and cigarettes to the sailors. There was very good business by that time, not like today . @ Julian Caruana, it`s been a long time, but if my memory are still good I remember that nickname. I am sorry to hear that he passed away. If somebody had to write a book of what we have passed from, while serving in Germany, I tell you that he will never finish it. Good and bad things we done. But we were still youngsters.

We need to no more about this.
It must have been very serious (not a pub brawl) for the soldiers to be recalled back.
They will probably be deployed on road blocks now to give them something to do!

Dear Mr G.C.Forte.
My late uncle Pawlu Chetcuti ( patrakk )from Balzan served in Germany and he had countless stories about fights between maltese soldiers and germans or english. As a child I loved listening to these stories and a s a grown up these stories go down very well with a couple of beers..
After all I guess it is part of being in the army?? well, ones needs to practise fighting every now and then!!! LOL

It is not a big deal................When soldiers, sailors, marines and all other foreign forces, were serving here in Malta, fights in Valletta was the order of the day..............When we use to serve in Germany, way back in the sixties, we use to have a fight nearly every week. 90 % of the incidents native women will be the cause.

Is this due to Lisbon Treaty? ..where troops from one country can be used in another country...utter madness. Highly dangerous scenario. now imagine if we went protesting and foreign troops controlled us..how would you feel?
