Enemalta has issued a call for tenders for a new €20 million electricity distribution centre at Kappara that will link Malta to the European grid by submarine cable.

The new facility will also serve as a hub for north-eastern Malta's energy needs. It should be completed next year.

Finance Minister Tonio Fenech said underground galleries for the power cables were already under construction.

He was speaking at the inauguration of an Enemalta district office in Gozo.

Mr Fenech said the Xewkija site would eventually double as an electricity distribution centre that would provide for most of Gozo's energy requirements.

Energy security combined with an adequate energy supply was essential for Gozo to reach its goals for economic growth and those set out by the cco-Gozo initiative, he added.

Construction work on the new Gozo distribution centre should finish later this year. Currently, Gozo gets most of its power from a distribution centre in Qala.
