ASA coaching courses

The Aquatic Sports Association (ASA) has, for some time, felt the need to strengthen its coaching sector in swimming and waterpolo, especially where training for youths under the age of 16 is concerned.

The opportunity to hold specialised courses locally materialised after Isabelle Zarb, the ASA administrative secretary, attended a coaching course in the US thanks to the assistance of the Maltese Olympic Committee (MOC) and the Olympic Solidarity.

In the past few months, the ASA introduced basic courses in swimming and waterpolo coaching leading to an ASA licence.

The ASA plans to organise bi-annual seminars so that experienced and new coaches are kept abreast of new coaching methods, rules and technology.

A good number of candidates attended the first coaching course in January. The second course is scheduled to commence on April 3.

Local waterpolo coaches will soon be given the opportunity to undertake an ASA course which will come to a close with a seminar. Sandro Campagna, the Italy coach, and Gianni Lonzi, the chairman of FINA's technical waterpolo committee, will address the seminar.
