Shortage of funds clips Thea's wings
Thea opening a birthday gift with Joe Dimech, head of Malta's delegation to the Eurovision Song Contest.
Malta's Eurovision ambassador Thea Garrett, who turned 18 today, has declared herself satisfied with tweaks to her song My Dream, made during eight hours of studio work in a Frankfurt studio last week.
The singer this afternoon attended a ceremony during which prize money was presented to the songwriters who placed in the first three positions in the Song for Europe contest.
Speaking to timesofmalta.com, the head of the Maltese delegation, Joe Dimech, said this year there would be no specially-recorded promotional video because it was not cost effective. The promo video would be Thea’s performance at the concert in Malta, enhanced with animations depicting a flying seagull flying, aping the bird which was on stage with Thea on the night.
This video will feature on Youtube and on official websites. The European Broadcasting Union is collecting the final versions of the videos for distribution among broadcasters across Europe.
Mr Dimech said Malta’s promotion would be focused on the internet. So far, there are no plans for Thea to appear in shows abroad, due to financial restrictions both in Malta and the host broadcasters themselves

I heard this duo who just recently recorded a song in Denmark last December while I was at City bar in Mosta and I think their song was really great. They should have their song on the radio. I think the duo is called Immediate Denial.

Describing these decisions is pathetic to say the very least, apart from achieving terrible results year in year out, this year's cost cutting measures not to produce a promotional video confirms that there is no strategy at all when it comes to the Eurovision.
Of course these measures didn't put off the people responsible to use a recording studio in Franfurt when a Maltese studio could have been easily chosen. This decision is simply giving a sign that we are already giving up winning the Eurovision. Mr.Dimech mentioned that the promotion will be focused on internet but didn't speicfy how, I hope that uploading a recorded rehearsal in Malta on youtube isn't the only promotion Mr.Dimech is focusing on because if it is then this is a big joke.
I guess it would be better if we don't participate every single year if we can't afford it financially but if we do participate we should have all the right ingredients to offer the full recipe, unless you go there with the right package, a good catchy and original (mhux dejjem ballads) song, a good performer, great choreography and a lot of promotion (mhux kemm intellaw video fuq youtube ta')!

Part2:
Once I suggested that the Culture Dept. and the Tourism Dept should work together. The Tourist dept. spends lots of money to promote Malta. So yes they should also help in this.
So to this year’s committee saying there are no funds for a video is totally CRAP.
@Grace Borg. Although I don’t know the details of your press conference you have my support. The only time I smiled and said you don’t know what you’re saying when you said you will get results when you were chairman at the time. Not your fault anyway as it was the first time.
Good Luck to Thea and please don't make the mistake that one did by letting 'TIKBIRLEK RASEK"..again good luck

Part 1: First of all as I always stated many times I was never keen about this festival. Many composers/authors/artists know how I feel about it.
My only advice to them was always and still is to give their best performance ever. DON’T MIND THE VOTE RESULTS. WHY?
Because yes from the start of this festival it was always, political, money, and lots of lobbying.
@wally vella-zarb:
When the first time we came 2nd, by Mary Spiteri’s song, that day if WE WANTED WE WOULD HAVE COME 1ST PLACE. Just before any jumps on me, I KNEW WHAT HAPPENED THERE.
But to give some food for thought I would like to remind everyone that the first 3 places were all by the same publisher, Warner Chappel. That night the only mistake was done by someone for the maltese committee. So YES A LOT OF THINGS GO BEHIND THE SCENE THAT PEOPLE DON’T EVEN REALISE.
@ ALL.
No it is not a waste of money as long as THINGS are done properly starting with the maltese committee. AND PLEASE FORGET THE VOTING RESULT!!

This is a good stance. It's all in the song and the singer after all. Thea is talented enough to give a good performance and that is what we need. Good luck.

So we have funds to take Thea to Frankfurt but we do not have funds for a music video and for touring tv shows? And who said that PROFESSIONAL internet promotion is not expensive?

Can we once and for all stop pretending that we are the best, always raising our expectations sky high and then we are greatly disappointed by the result. This is all money down the drain. Or, at least, we must not pretend that we are going to win it each time. This year's title of our song is very fitting as we are always dreaming.

Why do we always have to pull out the old chestnut of 'allies', 'neighbours' and 'block votes'? When we had good songs, Malta did well; when we had lousy songs it also was reflected in the voting. No more and no less. Presenting, as we did in the past, someone who is a local heart-throb but with a song that was a non-event for the rest of the members of Eurovision can only result - as has, in fact, happened - with Malta bringing up the rear during the contest. Our 'neighbours' were, and remain, the same.

Why all the austerity? We're out of the recession, or aren't we?

Dear Mr Mizzi Recession or not, why should the nation continue to waste tax payers money on a contest we will never win? We won't win, not because our song or our singer are not good enough, but because as we have seen in past editions, voting is all political. No matter how much money we put in it, no matter how much advertisement or performances, Malta will simply not win because we have no allies !

We have invested money to launch Thea both in Malta, Rome and Milan, it is a big surprise that PBS don't have the money for a decent videoclip. Well if everybody honoured his commitments, both Thea and PBS, would have the best videoclip money could buy! All details will be given during a press conference to be transmitted live on Thursday noon on Favourite Channel. Maybe PBS should advise how many people are travelling to Oslo, and in which capacity. Good evening All.
