Enemalta has issued a call for tenders for a new distribution centre in Kappara which will cater for the electricity needs of the North-East of Malta and also be Malta's link with the interconnector to the European power grid, Finance Minister Tonio Fenech said. Preparations for the new distribution centre have already been started, with workers currently drilling galleries through which the cables with run.

Mr Fenech made his comments when he inaugurated a new Enemalta district office in Xewkija, Gozo.

He said a new distribution centre was also being built at Xewkija to strengthen the power supply to Gozo. The current distribution centre in Qala will still be retained.

The minister said that apart from the major projects for the extension of the power station and the interconnector, Enemalta was also laying two 132kv cables from Delimara to the distribution centre at Marsa industrial estate.
