MUT suspends industrial action
The Malta Union of Teachers said today it was suspending industrial actions in state schools after receiving a communication from the Finance Ministry and the Ministry of Education which could serve as a good basis for discussion and agreement.
The union had ordered a range of industrial actions as it pressed its demand for allowances to teaching grades in view of increases in their responsibilities.
The teachers had been ordered not to perform duties which were not strictly related to teaching.

GIVE TEACHERS WHAT THEY CLAIM BELONGS TO THEM BUT THEN MAKE SURE TO GIVE OTHER WORKERS WHAT TRUELY BELONGS TO THEM IF WE WANT FAIRNESS TO PREVAIL. The sun is supposed to rise equally the same for all...

Logic tells me that directives should stand to a halt after we have concrete evidence that our allowances are increased. Who do you think you are messing with MUT? we are not dumb!!! I cannot understand why the directives were lifted for just a meeting WHICH STILL DID NOT TAKE PLACE YET!!!!!

At last this means that now our children in m'scala primary school will be given the milk once again? Since it is not very clear if this was an action by mut or not????

Pn must have struck a deal with Bencini, they knew his speeches would devestate their party and show their true face so after some days of insulting him on their news articles and blogs they took him back into their fold. A country full of opportinists looking only after their own interests.

@Carmel Callus - Teachers are not asking for less work and more pay. Along the years, teachers have been loaded with a lot of clerical duties, which they were doing withourt complaint, and have never had any allowances for the work added. Since the Collages and other reforms have come into being - namely the removal of exams and streaming, teachers have to prepare double or triple the work because of the wide spectrum of abilities in each class.
Mr Bencini was consistent from the begining - he always told Dr Louis Galea that for such reforms to be successful, teachers' allowances had to be reviewed. Dr. Galea had consented, but since there was a change of Ministers, the agreements were ignored.
Let us hope that the government is not playing for time like he did last year.

There are plenty of workers in Malta and Gozo whose responsibilities haveincreased al lot, in government departments. This means that these workers too are going to be paid allowances, same as the teachers?
Please reply.

That's the difference between governments in Malta. Under Labour, union fight so that workers don't lose what they have; under a Nationalist Goverment they fight to work less for more pay! And Mr Bencini knows what I'm saying!

if the Ministry of Finance thinks it can ride roughshod over the people's pockets and give in to this Union's claims, then the Ministry had better come up with salary increases for all the Government workers. We will never accept titbits as this Ministry's say-so.
