Maltese chef's 'fat' success

Pastry Chef Christopher Zammit has, for the third consecutive year, lifted the Gold Medal at Hotelympia 2010, the showcase for the catering industry, held in ExCel London.

His 'Rodeo' sculpture earned him the much coveted Gold Medal in the Works in Fat category. His other exhibit in the Pastillage (sugar) Miniatures of the Pastry Category, depicting a rider flying off his bike, also garnered him the Gold Medal besides being judged as Best in Class.

Mr Zammit, of Pembroke, has been working in Eastbourne, UK for the past 30 months. He has been participating in Hotelympia since 2002 with Miniatures, Sugar Flowers and Works in Pastillage.

He made his debut in Works in Fat in 2008, winning his first gold with his 'Indian on Horseback'. Last year, he was again successful with his 'Samurai'.

This year, he consolidated his position as an expert craftsman by taking the gold once again while proving that he has not lost his touch with his extremely detailed miniatures.

He has been invited to apply for the position of judge in Works in Fat at hospitality and culinary competitions next year.
