Italian and American legends Claudio Baglioni and Dionne Warwick will perform with tenor Joseph Calleja during a concert at the Granaries in Floriana on July 24.

A choir of 500 children will accompany Calleja during the annual summer concert, which will fuse elements of pop music with classical tunes.

Calleja said during the launch of the event yesterday: "My professional commitments take me all over the world and I end up spending a lot of time away from Malta. I miss my home country and I always look forward to that special date on my calendar, to spend an evening performing in my own country."

Involving the children in these concerts, he said, was a way of helping the younger generation appreciate classical music. The number of children participating is double that of last year's successful concert.

"These children will go home whistling and singing the tunes they are learning during rehearsals... Without sounding patronising, last year I was impressed at the way the children sang in tune throughout the whole concert," he smiled, adding that his daughter was among them.

Last year, Calleja sang with US star Michael Bolton at the Luxol Grounds in Pembroke. This year's July 24 concert has shifted to the Granaries, and the organisers, NNG Promotions, said that in case of inclement weather it would take place on July 25.

Baglioni, a musician, composer, author and writer, is best known for his song Questo Piccolo Grande Amore, voted in a national survey as the Italian song of the century.

Baglioni recently invited Calleja to contribute to his latest album QPGA.

Warwick has had an illustrious career spanning four decades that has seen her establishing herself as an international hit maker thanks to nearly 60 hits since her first hit Don't Make Me Over began its climb up the charts back in December 1962.

Ticket prices start at €35 and free tickets will be given to children who live in homes and institutions.

The Malta Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by British Maestro Paul Bateman, will also take part in the concert.

Pre-sale tickets to the concert will be available to all those registered on www.nngpromotions.com at a €10 discount as of Tuesday from 9 a.m. Regular tickets will go on sale on March 22 from all Agenda, Vodafone and Exotique outlets.

Anyone wishing to involve their children in the choir should send an e-mail to choir2@nngpromotions.com.
