Updated: changes man's condition to 'critical', adds details

An 85-year-old man suffered burns this morning in a fire in his bedroom in lower Valletta.

The blaze was noticed at about 5.00 a.m.

The man was rushed to hospital for treatment. His condition is critical, the police said. His 56-year-old daughter suffered slight injuries.

Slabs forming part of the old ceiling collapsed as a result of the blaze.

Firefighters of the Civil Protection Department and the district police were on the scene.
