German submarine in Grand Harbour
German Navy submarine U-17 (Pennant number S196) slipped into Grand Harbour this morning for a courtesy visit.
The submarine was commissioned in 1973 and subsequently modernised, but vessels of this type are now being withdrawn.
The submarine has eight torpedo tubes and can carry mines.
It is seen above crossing Dockyard Creek, which is dominated by the sleek lines of the superyacht The Maltese Falcon.

As a British permanent resident of Malta, pleased be reassured that the majority of British have zero interest in Malta and absolutely no intention in visiting, let alone trying to rule the Maltese.
Being a member of the Maltese community, I believe we should welcome all tourists and make sure that they enjoy their time on the islands, as the viral marketing effect is powerful and we need all the tourist revenue that we can generate. I always try to do my best by being friendly and helpful to tourists I come into contact with.
I travel abroad a lot and the feedback from people I meet is how friendly and helpful the Maltese people are.
So welcome to the crew of U17 and please tell your fellow citizens of the warm reception in Malta as Maria Buttigieg says :-)

I like this picture in more ways than one. We have a saying in the Highlands of Scotland and it goes. EVERYTHING HEALS WITH TIME and to see a German submarine in the Grand harbour is proof.

This article reminds of the German Submarine film 'Das Boot'. I highly suggest that you watch it as it is by no doubt THE best movie of its 'genre'. BTW, you'd realise what a pile of crap U-571 is.
Das Boot is a masterpiece and Im 110% sure you'd be fascinated by it as well!http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eVBPGZEVRH0&feature=related

In 1960-63, I was at Chatham Dockyard working on O class and S- class British submarines. These had twenty two transducers on either side where by the ping from the sonar would reach each transducer at different phase and through computer calculation and processing the position of the target could be known. THe torpedoes where continuously updated with the data through two servos. On firing, the torpedoes would move forward five length,s and then proceed to follow the gyro angle precessed accordingly to take the direction towards the target. THe torpedo was fed with the target angle and the dept it was to to move submerged towards the target. I wracked my brains on this as the solution to hit the target contained two directions, one of which unfortunately could hit the submarine itself and had to be eliminated. It took us quite a while to perfect this process using analogue computers with magslips and resolver to calculate the solution. I did enjoy my life in a submarine but such a life one can only live it for a short period. I also managed to design a switchgear which could break the main motors current without damage to contacts.

Wow...quite a sight seeing The Maltese Falcon towering over the German sub! But it's 2010 and we must remember that these visiting submariners wouldn't have been born during the WWII - so let's hope they are given a true Maltese welcome.

I sincerely hope that boat's crew are made welcome in Malta.
I'm glad you don't know what war is all about- the scars never heal.

Tony, I did not mean to be offensive in any manner, if I was, then I apologise. Wars are pure utter madness, nothing else but waste of life, resources, destruction and terror !!! I am against wars, sounds childish to some maybe, but I will stick to it. Indeed WW1 lead to WW2 etc etc etc............ I send my greetings to you from Germany.

The Grandfathers of HMS somthing never bombed Malta with 16000 tons of bombs dear Jesmond Micallef , maybe thats why they will never enjoy their stay like the HMS somthing's , how come the Maltese Aussie hasen t commented on this ? I wonder

Thats what wars are all about, the professional and legal destruction of the building and the natural environment, killing of human beings etc etc etc.....!!!! Germany has no offensive capability whatsoever, its a harmless nation. Why are people still stuck on WW2, when there is much more subsequent events like the mother of all wars, the Cold War which pioneered weapons of total complete erasure, including the totally innocent Earth life ?? I wish the German crew of the U-17 a pleasant stay on Malta. Just to let all of you know, I have also been to Laboe, next to Kiel in northern Germany, and visited the MARINE - EHRENMAL and the U-995, WW2 monument. Do people know how many young German men died in those confined machines ? Even being in one of those machines gave me the creeps, !!! Let alone fighting a war beneath the surface in them !!!! "Das Boot" from Wolfgang Petersen is a good film to watch !!

@ Jesmond Micallef.
If you had been in Malta during the war as I was you might have appreciated what I was getting at.
Who was Lord Melbury anyhow.
t farrugia
Mar 12th 2010, 15:16
lord melbury was a guest in the pilot episode of fawlty towers. he was a confidence trickster and when basil found out he went mad!!! :)

Mar 12th 2010, 15:35
Tony, Lord Melbury was a devious character in one of the episodes of Fawlty Towers called "A Touch of Class". I have the whole series on DVD.
No disrespect whatsoever, but you are quite right, I haven't got the slightest idea what WAR is all about !!!

I wellcome the German Navy U-17 in the Grand Harbour of Malta !!! I hope that the crew of this vessel enjoy their stay in Malta just as much as when an "HMS something" visits the island !!!
Tony Gatt, I remember Basil Fawlty very well, and Lord Melbury, what epitomy of upper class supremacy !!!

Dear Mr Tony Gatt take no notice of other comments, you made me laugh out loud!
In this World we need a laugh to see us through, I know I do here in the UK with an election looming.
You COULD have asked if they were looking for Poland, but I bet that would get complaints too!
Keep up the humour.
Great!

@Tony Gatt,
Tony don't worry, I appreciate your sense of humour lol.
@Jesmond Micallef.
Jesmond, I can understand what you are saying, but I have to admit that it doesn't quite fit the role of being friendly, environmentaly or otherwise.
It's a bit like saying that the plane that dropped the atom bomb on Hiroshima was the latest in modern technology and was very environmentaly friendly.

Mr Tony Gatt, Considering that German Navy submarines are all NON NUCLEAR, you know that it takes time to stop and refuel with diesel oil !!!
Please have a look at the link I have previously sent here !!! Perfectly environmentally friendly submarine technology without nuclear power and no nuclear ballistic missiles or torpedoes !!

WOW, What a picture ........... !!!
The rigging of the Sails on "The Maltese Falcon" is very innovative indeed - Dynarig !!
Here dear readers, please help yourselves :

Considering that the picture shows a German submarine with a beautifull this sailing yacht in the background, I would like to further promote a technological principle in sail propulsion devised by Dr. Anton Flettner way back in early 20th century Germany.
The Flettner Rotor "Sails" - A very innovative way of ship propulsion.
Again, please help yourselves :
