Emissions of CO2 from the Marsa power station in 2008 totalled 1,043,935 tonnes, while those from Delimara amounted to 974,650 tonnes. The combined total was 2,018,585 tonnes, compared with the 2,107,837 tonnes allowed to Malta by the European Commission in the first year of the Emissions Trading Period.

Malta therefore did not make use of the mechanism to increase its allowance.

The information was given by Economy Minister Tonio Fenech in reply to a parliamentary question by Labour MP Leo Brincat.
