Still no mention of PM's 'positive results' (1)
Reading Lino Spiteri's Talking Point on the second anniversary of Lawrence Gonzi's election victory in 2008, I couldn't help but see the chasm between the partisan Sunday posturing of the present Labour leadership and the credit given to Dr Gonzi by a Labour ex-politician like Mr Spiteri who also objectively pointed out where the government's performance could have been better.
Despite promising to mention the government's achievements even when putting forward the opposition's criticism, I have still to read or hear a clear declaration from the Labour leadership like Mr Spiteri's "Gonzi can feel that the way he confronted the challenges of the recession is a plus.
"He took early action based on a micro focus, rather than a broad sweep. Manufacturers were supported, the government offered meaningful encouragement to invest for better times. Discharges were kept to a minimum and a number of companies laid down plans for new capital investment. A cost there was. More important, there was a positive result."
Dr Gonzi has shown his true mettle in being an all-weather leader, not just a leader for the good times. The fact that the worst international recession in 80 years has only touched us lightly is of great credit to a Prime Minister whose best times, I believe, are ahead of him.

@ Adrian Aquilina. Not everybody looks at it from your point of view. Some are blue eyed boys and they know on which side their bread is buttered. You may have no butter on either side of your bread (like me.) @ Eddie A. Did you take a look at Lino's piece today? Why don't you mention those articles in which Lino was not so positive to your beloved Gonzi PN? Like Adrian Aquilina I too take offence at your sticking up to a party which has been preaching' money no problem' and building up unprecedented debts and then bleeding me dry to pay them off, and whose leader has voted with all his heart in favour of increasing to high heaven the utility rates.

The truth is that DR Gonzi solved "HIS" problems, and partly that of his Party. As to the rest of the results, one only has to ask pensioner, worker, and the self employed as how the sky high "bla kuxjenza socjali" tariffs are making their life a misery. The rest is just hot air!

Six years ago, Dr. Gonzi became Prime Minister. Then, he had a bucket full of dreams and as the years went by those dreams became his vision for our beloved country. Over the past two years, the foundations for his vision have been cast. Today we can safely say the vision is turning into reality. SmartCity will have its first tenants by September. SR Technics will commence their operations within months, Methode, Trelleborg, Stainless Steel, Toly Products and Island Hotel Groups have invested further, showing faith in this vision. Then there are new embellishment project that came to life. The City Gate project will commence in April. New schools have been built and others are about to be constructed. The Delimara Power Station is being extended. The Marinas are being privatized and so is the dockyard. The economy is slowly but surely growing. Unemployment has started to decrease. The numberr of gainfully occupied is increasing. All this is happening when the world is in recession and the Opposition doing its utmost to hinder progress.
Thank God for his mercy. Two years ago, we could have ended up with a Socialist Government. Nazzjonalisti! Qumu bl-eluf min taghkom. Let's stop being grumpy.

@A.Aquilina:it is all a matter of what the country can afford, what gives the maximum benefit to the maximum number of people and not what you and I pretend to have in our pockets!
You and I should shoulder our expenses and have made provision for when the times are negative.

touched us lightly? gonzi helped? nothing has been done to help, excessive bills have been forced apon us,job losses getting worse, the economy is not improving, shops are struggling and there has been no help for buisiness at all.just for two companies who are large businesses and just to pay their wages..one of the companies is still getting rid of staff due to buisiness being so bad..the country is on the verge of collapse and i take offence when you stick up for a party that is not helping instead of people who are losing jobs, losing their buisinesses, having their water and electric cut off,and pensioners, like my parents, who have half their pension taken from them...our government has helped the least of any european government and that is why we are not recovering while others are,,have a thought for people first
