Ford becomes top US carmaker

The Ford Motor Company was the top carmaker by sales in the United States last month, overtaking General Motors in the monthly sales tables for the first time since 1998.

Ford clocked sales of over 142,000, up 43 per cent on the same month last year.

Every Ford brand and product category saw a sales increase, with month-on-month sales also up 22 per cent compared to January. Ford estimates its February US total market share was approximately 17 per cent - up three percentage points versus a year ago and ahead of General Motors and Toyota. In February, Ford sales to retail customers were 28 per cent higher versus a year ago, and sales to fleet customers were up 74 per cent.

The company said in a statement that it remains committed to delivering the freshest line-up of new products in the US industry.
