MP files court application against MRA over utility tariffs
Labour MP Joe Mizzi has filed an application in court against the Malta Resources Authority complaining that it was not upholding the interests of consumers in its consideration of the water and electricity tariffs.
He said that he first complained directly to the Authority in January last year but it was clear that the MRA had failed to adequately address his complaint.
He said the authority was acting more as the defender of the utility companies.
He called on the Authority to annul its decisions.
Dr Justyne Caruana signed signed the application

@ M. Cassar
You seems to be all over the place. Can you be clear in your comments. When price of oil was at $12.00 a barrel during Sant's tenure, the Sant Government had proposed to increase Utility rates considerably. Some argue if the rate of inflation is to be factored in, the Utility rates will be higher today then those announced by the Malta Resource Authority.

"Labour MP Joe Mizzi has filed an application in court against the Malta Resources Authority complaining that it was not upholding the interests of consumers in its consideration of the water and electricity tariffs."
In the past you have claimed that you know for certainly where oil could be found. My question to you whose interests are you protecting from not divulging this information to the appropriate Authorities. For sure, it is not the interests of the people that you claim to be defending by your actions today.

@R. AGIUS
If court reject good for nothing Mizzi REASONABLE and LOGICAL application, WHY YOU EXPECT HIM TO RESIGN ?
He is doing a duty expected from him to his constituency who voted for him .
Those who see their pockets and refrain from doing their duty to voters should resign.

ghax Joe Mizzi ħada legalment kontra MRA il-prezz tad-dawl u l-ilma se jonqos. Farsa kbira. Dawn l-affarijiet huma mhux gġal poplu malti imma għal dawk in-nies li fil-meetings tal-partiti politiċi ikunu fl-ewwel ringili b'halqhom miftuh berah ma imurx jinghat xi haga u jibilawix. Joe Mizzi tista tghidilna jekk meta ikun hemm il-labour hux se jorhoss il-dawl u l-ilma jekk il-prezz internazzjonali jibqa kif huwa illum

Sara Spieri - you can't even spell your name right...price of oil??..then why are european buying oil and paying three times less than us...why didn't tariffs go down when oil prices went down even in sant's times they were 12 dollars..I will tell you since you don't seem to have any idea..we are paying for Pn's years of corruption ineccifiency and to recuparate our economy which has been robbed even though the people always paid their part fairly. Pn = big cheat

At least something is being done to defend Joe Public, unlike other mp's who criticised their Government, and then were bought with 30 pieces of silver to vote against the same people who voted them in.

This is the job of an opposition in a democratic nation to point out deficiencies for the Government to solve and rectify. That is the job of Opposition members of parliament or we just prefer to continue financing their wages just for doing nothing.

If the court rejects the case will Joe Mizzi resign for wasting everyone's time and more taxpayer's money?

@PL
Please tell us how much the "right" price for the utility bills should be. Then, if PL gets elected in next elections, we may count on having the difference as credit.

Before the election the former socialist minister Mizzi said that he knew where oil can be struck. Wouldn't it be better if he speaks out so that the bills will become cheaper?

More gimmicks from the party tat-teatrin! Give us an alternative given that the oil component in the tariffs is 90%.

In my opinion this is a very good initiative and I hope that MPs from the nationalist party will do the same when they would be in opposition for the benefit of consumers.
In any case, let us hope that justice will prevail!

The PL has to credible in all its actions. It cannot contradict itself by sometimes doing or saying something and sometimes doing and saying perfectly the opposite. And this is a very good case in point.
Labour MP Joe Mizzi has filed an application in our courts against the Malta Resources Authority. Irrespective of whatever is the complaint, this means and shows that the PL has all the trust in our Law Courts. On the other hand, in the case regarding the Car Registration Fees issue, the PL has publicly declared that it would give all concerned, including himself and his wife, an immediate refund and not wait for the Courts judgment if in Government.
With the same reasoning, I challenge Dr. Joseph Muscat to declare from now that, if his party is returned to Government, he will not wait for the Court’s Judgment (the one he himself asked for) but immediately refunds the difference between today’s Electricity and Water Tariffs and what he thinks that they should be. And to do this, he must tell us now how much in his opinion these tariffs should be as from January 01 2010.

I fully concur with the MP's findings regarding a failure to answer or adequately address a citizen's complaint lodged with the MRA ,as I can readily attest to a similar failure in my experience .However,is not the Office of the Ombudsman the correct body to address these concerns with and for that entity to then mediate and address such concerns before initiating legal proceedings?

It would be better if Joe Mizzi advises the government where Malta could strike oil.. he declared he would resign if oil is not found within 6 months from when the PL is elected to govern.
If he doesnt divulge this 'oh so called important information' he should either not make such stupid comments or resign as he said he would do if oil is not found..
Come on Mr. Mizzi make us rich..
Lets get serious PL pls!!!
