'Il-Kampanjol' passes away
Popular Maltese singer Toni Gauci, better known as Il-Kampanjol, passed away today, aged 65.
The Labour Party in a statement saluted his memory and said he had been among singers who promoted Maltese folk singing in the post-war years.

I was playing mandolin at Valletta ( around october ) and he came near me and we started talking about folk music and then I realised how much he was still popular and respected by the people. Everybody stopped and talked to him.

Lil Tony Gauci ilni nafu mill-1973 li konna naħdmu flimkien ġo fabbrika (B. Paradise) ġewwa Bulubel. Meta kien jitkellem magħna kien jinduna kif tkun il-burdata, imma konna nibqaw ċerti li minn burdata ħażina kien jgħidlek ċajta ħalli jarak titbissem. Tony issa daħħak u kanta lill-anġli li tant ħabbejt tul ħajtek għax dejjem kont tisimgħak tfaħħar lil Alla.

As Charles Buttigieg well said earlier, Tony Gauci made so many people happy over a long singing career... besides his joyous character, always ready to come up with a genuine smile and a simple joke.
I treasure fond memories of Tony since the seventies ...his cheerful presence, whatever the circumstances! Tony will be deeply missed by all who him, but his dedication to Maltese music and folklore will be treasured for many years! May he rest in peace and may the Lord grant the necessary support to all his dear ones!

I met him about three years ago while I was singing in a restaurant. He came up to me to ask for a card. He was really down to earth.

Tony made me very happy with his singing when I was a little boy. I remember mum singing one of his songs Il Kalendarju for me to smile, open my mouth and in goes the pappa-cejca. Your songs will live forever Toni. You shall be missed.

Great gentleman. We were long time pals. The Maltese music scene has lost one of the pioneers of Maltese music. His music brought joy to many and he will be sadly missed. Rest in peace my friend.
