Further to the letter by Joe Messina about the resurfacing of Għar-il-Lembi Street, Sliema, I would like to draw the attention of those concerned that the same inconvenience, if not worse, is being shared by the residents of lower High Street i.e. the part from the top of Għar-il-Lembi leading out to Tower Road.

There were no workmen on Monday afternoon, Tuesday or Wednesday of last week, leaving the road in such a state that no car could enter. We either could not get out of our garage, or could not get back in again, if we happened to have left early in the morning. There was a deep huge hole at one end of the road, which added to the danger. In fact, I jokingly asked one of the workmen if he was digging a grave to bury all the residents of that part of the street, since they would soon all pass away either as a result of an accident, or as a result of a heart attack having to go through such an ordeal.

The workmen returned on Thursday morning and Friday, and started smoothing Għar il-Lembi Street but High Street was left in the most appalling state. No one came on Saturday, and with yesterday's rains our garage was completely flooded, ruining some things I had stored in a cupboard. Having said all this, what irritated me most was not the workmen's inefficient work (most of us are used to such attitudes by now).

What really upset me was the way I was treated by one of the councillors who was at the Sliema Local Council on Wednesday morning when I went to put forward my complaint. The minute I mentioned High Street he immediately washed his hands and said that the council had nothing to do with the work, as the workmen were the government's responsibility. Then as I tried to ask him who I could talk to, as I expected him to help me out, considering that he was one of the Sliema councillors, not only did he ignore me as I spoke to him but he even picked up a photo album and turned its pages showing that he had no intention of listening to me.

I actually had to tell him how rude he was to go through the pages of a photo album when one of his constituents was actually sitting in front of him and asking for his help.

How can we expect respect from the workmen, if we don't even get any respect from our councillors?
