I refer to the article Health Risks To Mother And Babies From IVF Discussed (March 5).

The most crucial point I raised during the Select Committee meeting of March 3 was not adequately covered in this article. While the facility to freeze embryos would avoid the simultaneous introduction of two or three embryos with all the complications associated with multiple pregnancy, notably prematurity with respiratory and neurological repercussions, wastage of embryos is not to be permitted.

The Committee will be listening to specialists to determine if freezing of embryos is absolutely necessary but this could only be considered on condition that all embryos are used by the couple at a later stage, thus not creating any wastage.

Additional information on the discussions in the Committee can be obtained from the sound file available online on the Committee web page which can be found at http://www.parliament.gov.mt/sc-map?l=1 .
