A total of 15,335 bags of blood were donated in Malta between September 2008 and September 2009, Health Minister Joseph Cassar said in reply to a parliamentary question by Labour MP Anthony Agius Decelis.

He said the average number of bags donated in a year was between 14,000 and 15,000. There had been 14,408 in 2006, 14,125 in 3007 and 14,810 in 2008.

Dr Cassar added that, through the generosity of Maltese blood donors, the blood bank had always managed to cover the country's needs, and there had never been any need to import blood products.
