The never-ending saga of road repairs (2)
Last December, a local councillor informed me that they were going to resurface Għar il-Lembi Street, Sliema. Great, I thought, at long last. Work started around the second week of December but soon after they had to hold all works because they decided to change the water pipes. Fair enough.
Works started again in the second week of January but have not yet been completed. First of all there were only three to four workers employed by the contractor.
They started changing the piping system and then had to cover the trenches again. But then they had to reopen the trenches so that the water services personnel could do their part of the job. Why did they not work simultaneously? This would have saved doing the same job twice. Even then, only two workers from the water services were there and most of the time one of them was just looking.
In the meantime we have to live with inhaling dust and with a very rough road. Most of the residents are elderly people. Why does it have to take over three months to change a few pipes and re-surface the road over just a 200-metre stretch?
The local council was informed and there was an architect to oversee the works. Why did he not insist that works finish on schedule, which according to the council was about three weeks ago?
