Iran launches new cruise missile production line
Iran today launched a new production line of highly accurate, short range cruise missiles capable of evading radar, state TV reported.
The report quoted Iranian defence minister General Ahmad Vahidi as saying that the Nasr 1 (Victory) would be capable of destroying targets up to 1,000 tons in size.
The missile can be launched from the surface but would eventually be modified to be fired from helicopters and submarines, he said.
Gen Vahidi said it took some two years for an Iranian expert to develop the production line and it would strengthen Iran's naval power.
Iran frequently makes announcements about new advances in military technology that cannot be independently verified.
Iran began a military self-sufficiency programme in 1992, under which it produces a large range of weapons, including tanks, medium range missiles, jet fighters and torpedoes.
